Advice needed re neighbours

Hi

I am at the end of my tether.

The adjoining flat to mine (I live in a conversion of 2 flats, mine is a house albeit a very small one). The flat in question although adjoining is the next property along, think really old properties that are either above or behind shops. The flat next door is rented (I own my house and have done for about 7 years) and nightmare neighbours is the politest description I can think of. Despite only one of their walls adjoining to my landing the noise is horrendous. I am sat here in tears and my cat is hiding shaking with fear. The music is mindblowingly loud, I can't hear myself think in any room of my house, upstairs or downstairs, it's not even just the bass of the music, I can hear every single word as if it's in my own house. I can't even hear my own tv properly. Genuinely, people are walking past looking in horror at the flat in question due to the noise coming from it. The music (although that's a loose description, Basshunter anyone??) is also interspersed with excessive screaming (in a drunk kind of way rather than a violent kind of way). This has become a very regular occurrence and is making my life a misery.

I've tried knocking on their door but they don't answer, ever. In fact, whenever they have visitors (and thats a lot), the procedure seems to be standing outside their window (and mine) and hollering at the person in there to 'f***ing let me in *****', day and night. They throw rubbish out of their window onto the flat roof below them (which is also by my bedroom window) and I regularly get the very strong smell of cannabis from their window blow into my house if the windows are open. I've only seen the couple who live there walking past (their front door is the front on the street, mine is at the back behind the shops) and scary and vicious looking would be an understatement. Think tattoos all his face and I can hear the arguments they have, you'll have to take my word that these are not nice, considerate people by any stretch of the imagination. (Oh and in case I start getting accusations, I have friends with tattoos, just not all over their faces!)

I really need to get this sorted so today (as well as knocking on their front door yet again) I downloaded from the land registry the title register with the plan of writing to their landlord. Unfortunately the leaseholder has obviously not informed their mortgage lender of it being leased out as the registered address is still the same address as the flat.

I have also just called the police but they were very clear, there's nothing they can do as it's private property. They told me to contact environmental health but from what I've read on here, I will be expected to keep a diary and there's also the issue of declaring disputes when I sell my house.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do??

You can most definitely report the drugs to the police!
I'd also start keeping a log of any ASB, and contact your local noise abatement team.
  • Keep a log of all the incidents even if they seem stupid they help build up a case. You have to go to the LL as they are responsible for their own tenants. If the music is loud contact the environmental health and they can check decibel levels. Also makes nuisance of yourself with the police. Never go directly to the neighbours as if they are as horrid as you say it can make it worse. Trust me after 7 years of ASB with my neighbours I have had enough and am leaving but we did get a final warning on one of the neighbours and they have since been fine. You have to really make a nuisance of yourself like calling the police every time something happens even if you don't want an officer to come out they still have to log it as an incident. Good luck I know the pain of living with Anti social neighbours and how it can affect your whole life.
  • Also if they don't listen I have found a really great way of making them listen is to get a close friend to go to the LL or police and say they are worried you might do something silly worked like a charm with me. I wasn't gonna do anything but they took me a lot more seriously.

I really feel for you, maybe you should report the landlord to the mortgage company that way they might get evicted!

Don't sit there and take it. Get the police round but ensure you tell them not to attend your house to minimise the risk of you being targeted in revenge.

I tried to get the police out- they refused! Said there's nothing they can do unless it spills over into the street, unlikely being as it's a first floor flat. The music and noise is still going.... been about 7 hours now!

Report an anonymous tip to the police about the drugs/cannabis? Don't mention anything else.. They'll act pretty sharp'ish..

Just don't forget to be clear on the address, building and entrance.. Don't want them breaking into your house by accident. :D

I think your best bet is to call the police, and mention the drugs, but also that the noise is such you are very concerned someone is fighting or being hurt because of the screaming.

They will def come out then.

Do you know what, if I thought this would work I'd try it in a minute. Unfortunately when it comes to neighbours, I really did pull the short straw. My other neighbours (whose house backs onto mine) are full on hard core drug dealers. There was a massive raid done on them last year (about 30 policemen stormed their house and garden) but nothing seemed to have come of it. People turn up to buy drugs every 10 minutes or so, I've told the police (annonomously obviously) many times and they say they know but they won't do anything about it. I have very little faith in the police round here, seems like they can't be bothered to investigate crimes even when they're handed to them on a plate 😩
