A new wonder of the world to be built in London

  • I think a working bridge would do more to "reconcile and soothe" the public [whatever that means] so they could get to work easier. It would probably cost less than 25% of the £150 million.

Who would pay for the large army of gardeners to keep it 'nice', and another army of security people to move away the army of beggars that will be hitting our London streets any time soon?

Someone needs to tell Ms Lumley her idea is absolutely hideous.

    Yeah , yeah.
We need realists like me to stop dreamers like you spending all our hard earned on frivolous vanity projects.

    We're spending 150bn a year on welfare.
This bridge would cost 8 hours of welfare.

    We need more dreamers.
Don't blame me, I voted Remain.

I think it's far to say London is one seriously up and coming city.

    Who's paying for it?
    Is it value for money?

I'd guess there are 100 other projects that would benefit the economy more.

    Stick or twist then.

On that basis, I'll twist. Can we spend 6 weeks of welfare money beefing up graphene research in Manchester and NW. It might even pay off commercially.

The time to build showcase bridges was pre-2007, when the world seemed awash with cash. Now, it just looks like you are rubbing the noses in it for those faced with working out where the next gas bill money comes from.

    Make it wider

Add 5000 apartments to it on either side

Sell them for £20 million a piece to foreign million-billionaires

Use the £100 billion raised to build a million council homes in other parts of London

    Win win fantasy

How fekin ludicrous would that be. A bridge woth just 5000 apartments 'worth' over £100billion pounds or more than the whole of Birmingham

    Funded through public appeal. http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/519135/20131103/garden-bridge-dan-pearson-joanna-lumley-heatherwick.htm

    Ok.
Assuming the public donate £150 million (I still wonder if this fund could be put to better use?), how will the gardens be maintained?

The council already have a team of gardeners appointed to look after parks etc in the city. They probably wouldn't need anyone extra.

Presumably they must have spare capacity if they are to take on this work.

We must be wasting money on them now.

My comment doesn't indicate they have spare capacity. They'll just reschedule the maintenance rota is all.
