I was confused when I started this thread, but I think I'm getting there

A Kindle with a colour screen would basically be a Kindle Fire, one of the main alternatives I'd consider is the Nook HD+ - this has a 9in 1080p screen which is very good for text and comics plus it's cheap, the Nook also has Google Play Store access so you can install the Kindle applications or any other Android software you want. Its processor is not particularly quick so it's not great for gaming or anything else a bit more hardware intensive.
Other similar name brand devices would be the Google Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
