Which ebook to buy?

I'm confused with all the information on ebooks.

Not after anything fancy or technical, doesn't have to be new, reconditioned / 2nd hand will do, just after something to read and help me doze off to sleep.

I'm not really a book reader, so, doesn't have to be books, I'm sure I've seen it mentioned that magazines / comics etc., etc., can be on an ebook.

Yes you can do magazines and newspapers on a e reader.

Bog standard Kindle is £69 new, Nook (Barnes and Noble) is going for £40 at the moment(again bog standard version).

The biggest name is the Kindle from Amazon, they do reconditioned ones of the higher specs reader/tablets. But if just after one to read original Kindle. I love mine. There are free books on Amazon and some from 65p.

Have been a Kindle user for quite some time. Saw the nook bargains available and went to buy it for my wife. Came back without one as to me the Kindle is a far nicer product. Always enjoyed a clear screen on the Kindle, but with the Nook only every 10th page is completely clear. The others seem to have bleed over from previous pages I think. If you read a lot a dedicated unit is unbeatable - you will run out of chapters before you run out of charge. If for spasmodic use a tablet is a more general purpose tool.

Another vote for the basic Kindle. I sometimes read books on my tablet but the Kindle far superior, especially on bright sunny days!

It sounds like that Nook may have been faulty as it uses the same screen as the Kindle does at least pre-paperwhite, having used both the standard Kindle and Nook I don't find either any different for screen quality. The Amazon ecosystem is far better though so if choosing a reader for simplicity I think it's a much better choice.

For reading standard books the e-ink displays on the likes of the Kindle and Nook Simple Touch are superb, the text is very clear, it's readable in sunlight and the devices can are thin, light and have superb batterylife. However they're not well suited to magazines and comics so if that's going to be one of the main uses I'd be looking at a standard tablet such as the Kindle Fire, Nook HD+, Nexus 7, Galaxy Tab etc.

I was never much of a book reader but thought a Kindle would be handy and light to use if I couldn't get to sleep without disturbing my DH too much.

Well from someone who never bought a book (did read the paper) I am a complete convert. I have read lots of books on the Kindle.

I am reading `A woman of substance` by Barbara Taylor-Bradford at the moment. It is very long book but I find it very entertaining.

Also very good for reading on the aircraft, not too bulky. Wouldn't bother with paperbacks after this.

I bought OH a basic Nook for his birthday, but it wouldn't charge. This really put me off, so I got my money back and bought him a basic Kindle instead.

I should have done this in the first place, it was just that the Nook was £29 at the time:o

Anyway he thinks the Kindle is great; hasn't had to buy a book yet as there are so many free ones.
Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

MSE moment.... The Kindle works out expensive for books and you cannot pass on the books to friends!
I have an original Kobo and it is fine.
One thing that annoys me is that many books are not available on any ebook format and many are cheaper to buy the real book with P&P than to buy the ebook version! Crazy!!!!!
  • I've been a Kindle ebook user for over 3 years now and wouldn't be without it.

    HOWEVER...

Although you can put comics/magazines on it, it is rubbish for them; you need a colour screen for that job.
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

  • I've got the nook simple touch. £29.00 from John Lewis 2 years warranty as standard. Its a great little gadget and you can download books from council libraries which the kindle definitely doesn't.
