Gender inequality in hairdressers charges

flagstones

I was just about to book a haircut and noticed they were still charging different prices for "ladies" cut and style and "mens". I know the law has changed re discriminating on charging for services so I was wondering if they are still allowed to do that?
I can understand different charging for different lengths or cuts but this is just ladies/men.

Well if as a bloke I went to a Ladies hairdresser then I would expect to get charged £20-£30, whilst if I went to a barber I get charged £6.50.
I have suggested to the missus she gives the barber a try but for some unknown reason she is not too keen on that idea. I have also never seen any women in his shop which is very strange considering the excellent price.
I don't really know what you are after, they are two different species and both will cut the hair of the opposite sex and you will be charged the prevailing rate for that establishment.0 -
I would imagine that if a man and a woman both went to the same place with similar hair and had exactly the same hair cut then they should be charged the same price or it would be discrimination.
As Hintza said the prices in hairdressers (for men) are usually way more than the price for the same haircut in a barbers.0 -

I used to go to a barbers when my hair was really short - all it needed was shaving around the sides and a bit of a trim at the fringe.
They were a bit bemused when I first went in, but I became a regular.0 -
Is this serious?
If they were getting the 'exact' same service you have a point, but when you factor in possible washing, blowdrying, styling plus cost of any products used it can vastly change the service. I would say on average a ladies haircut will be take longer and cost more than a mans.
Not discrimination in any way.0 -
There are hairdressers and people who cut hair. I will Pay good money for a good hairdresser. Its an artistic skill.0

My son and I go to the same hairdresser, my hair costs £25, his costs £15.
Mine gets washed, cut, products used, blow dried, dressed and takes 1hr. His gets washed, cut, dressed and takes half an hour.
Seems only fair to me that he pays the hairdresser less for less of his time, in fact I would be mighty pee'd off f he charged my son the same as me for only taking half the time.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
I've known guys who have long "lady length" hair and they get charged the women's rate. I think hairdressers will have a disclaimer if your hair is a certain length you fall in to the women's rate.0
