Well I'm kind of getting somewhere in term of narrowing things down :p so I currently have 2 Panasonic, 1 LG and maybe a Sony on my list.

And yeah, I know about who gets their panels from whom and all the rest ;) JL would indeed be my preferred place to order from because of their 5 years guarantee but it will depend on what is on special offer where (if any, that is)

I don't really care about it becoming out of date. I'm just going for a good panel which I can tweak to my taste. My current TV was chosen along those lines too and it has served me well. It's still got a better picture that some of the TVs I've seen out there but I've also seen some good stuff too.
We opted for TX-L47ET61B (from John Lewis) & we're incredibly happy with it. I know you're not bothered about 3D but it's well worth having & amazing to watch. John Lewis also give 5 year guarantee.

From my limited viewing of the two types I would pay the extra for active technology, its way more effective.

No. Mine was £364 from Richersounds for a 43" Plasma Samsung active 3d and I am very happy with it.

    Owch!!
In my opinion Passive is better for long periods (no flicker that plagues Active shutter lenses). Active gave me a headache after an hour or so.

But I can watch all day with my passive 3D TV. Done The Hobbit, Tron then Prometheus in 3D in one sitting ^_^ I was VERY board that day... lol
