Where to find some cats/kittens?

We would love to get a couple of cats soon, can you recommend anywhere to look?
We got our last cats through word of mouth (sadly both died in accidents within a couple of months of each other earlier this year). We are feeling ready to home some more but don't seem to have heard of any available. I tried looking at all of the local cat shelter websites but they seem quite restrictive and I couldn't find any that would rehome to us with a four year old child.
The online 'for sale' sites I've found mainly seem to advertise expensive breeds. Our last cats were Bengals and we loved them but worry that it was due to their temperament that they took more risks on the road. We have recently moved to a quieter area and are no longer near busy roads but I think it would always be a concern.
Thanks

Wrong time of year for kittens really. April/May through to September is most common time unless you're looking for a slightly older one.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

Lots of places do not rehome this time of the year anyway - risk of them being abused around Halloween and ending up as "presents" at Xmas and homeless soon after.
Post here for advice - post in the home offered for cats section on Purrs:

so look for 'free to good home' ads! to me that is just the same as rescue. you are able to go along and assess the kitt and if you think its healthy and old enough and you 'want' it - whats the difference between that kitten and another in a 'shelter'? you have adopted a kitty!0

Interesting, our local cat shelter quite happily homed us a cat when our son is 1 and a bit. We did have to pick carefully to make sure that we chose a cat who was used to little ones. You could try http://catchat.org/ to see if you have any other rescue centres around?0

Still plenty of kittens around....I have 3 in my back bedroom for starters! You are right though that many rescues wont home where a child is under five (little white lie time? )
catchat is a great resource to find local rescue centres.0 -

By getting a kitten from a 'free to good home' ad, you may end up encouraging somebody to keep letting their cats breed. Rescues will have ensured mum got spayed.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.0 -

Don't know where you live but I know someone with 4 kittens .0

I guess when I said it's the wrong time of year for kittens, I meant ones being born, and totally forgetting that those born in Aug/Sept will be looking for homes around now.
Agree with other posters about not buying from free-ad sites as this encourages indiscriminate breeding. Please try to go through a rescue if you can. There are many out there other then RSPCA and CPL. If you could post the area you're seeking then maybe posters can help.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0
