It'll be me I suspect, but what comes after Act 199? Am I allowed to correct you?

1998 as opposed to 199, thank you for correcting your mistake.

The thirty days comes from The Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 section 4, where paragraph 5 tells us:
(5)In any other case, the relevant day is the last day of the period of 30 days beginning with—
(a)the day on which the obligation of the supplier to which the debt relates is performed; or
(b)the day on which the purchaser has notice of the amount of the debt or (where that amount is unascertained) the sum which the supplier claims is the amount of the debt,
In other words, if no other date is agreed then thirty days after the invoice is presented, the payment is late and can be subject to interest and other amounts.

Does that only apply for b2b?
I always thought that b2c and b2b were both pay on invoice unless an account agreement had been set up. In the OP's case, if no account was set up, then pay on invoice, or don't expect to be helped in the future.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

So ... earthstorm and antrobus WERE saying the same thing, but earthstorm couldn't see it? (Hence why he "shot me down" for suggesting this).

The default position for payment is 30 days from date of invoice in the absence of agreed terms.

OP if you ever return to this thread you may want to consider that you may not be a consumer, but a Landlord and as such possibly have obligations as a Main Contractor in Law. You may also have obligations under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) as a main contractor. Your plumber (if he was aware of your landlord status) will have obligatons as a sub-contractor within the scope of CIS.

I would strongly suggest that if you are indeed a Landlord that neither party would want this to ever go infront of a court unless you both have met your obligations under the CIS. It could prove very costly to the pair of you.

Wow I thought this forum was for advice and discussion rather than personal attacks!

For the information of the 'attackers' on here, I've already approached the plumber and arranged to pay half now and half later. By the letter of the law, I could have paid any time providing it was within 30 days of the invoice date.

Most businesses pay invoices within the 30 days and it is not unusual to do this, hence my original question.

Thanks for the productive comments to those that were polite. This issue is now resolved.

Wow, what a grumpy **** you are. Next time you post I'd sort your attitude out, people were offering advice.

Ridiculous to come on here whinging that someone wants paying, and then slate those who agree! Mumsnet is probably better for you.
