Could you not pay £450 up now then the rest on 30th November?

Be careful not to get yourself a reputation, otherwise people will be reluctant to do work for you and demand cash upfront.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

i'm old fashioned but if I employ someone to do some work for me I make sure I can pay him when the bill arrives.

I don't like to leave him waiting for 30 days

In the absence of payment terms on the invoice I would have paid yesterday, seeing as that was the date on the invoice.

As a landlord you are running a business, as is the plumber. A sensible business person looks at the bigger picture in their dealings with suppliers and contractors. It may suit your sole needs to hang out payment, but that's going to be a cost/pain to him. Far better to at least share the pain (by paying as much as you possibly can) and have a contractor that you can call on again, than find that when your tenant calls you in 6 months time with a burst pipe, this plumber has not only blacklisted you, but warned all his mates that you are a slow payer.

    Your call!

Do your tenants make you wait 30 days after their rent is due?

At work we pay suppliers 30 day end of month so I'm now paying all the sept invoices.

Regular customers get the same deal, new customers pay up front
  • Wow I thought this forum was for advice and discussion rather than personal attacks!

For the information of the 'attackers' on here, I've already approached the plumber and arranged to pay half now and half later. By the letter of the law, I could have paid any time providing it was within 30 days of the invoice date.

Most businesses pay invoices within the 30 days and it is not unusual to do this, hence my original question.

Thanks for the productive comments to those that were polite. This issue is now resolved.

By the letter of the law there is no time limits, just what you agree. Some services charge upfront (as this plumber will probably require from now on) or paid on the day. Others (including lots of high street companies) withhold payment for 90+ days.

There was advice, discussion and questions asked of you, the advice also mentioned a couple of times that you were in the opinion of ther writers, being unfair.
    No-one was impolite.
    No-one made a personal attack.

This part of the forum is for CONSUMER rights . You are running a business so you've posted in the wrong place I think.

By what law can you avoid paying for 30 days?
