Obtaining home insurance with a criminal record

Hi everyone,

I am finding it tricky to obtain home insurance.
Reasons
Partner has a criminal record (Conditional discharge - spent in a year)
Home is near a watercourse.

Indivually this appears to be ok to find, however together it is proving tricky.

Does anyone have any ideas that could help?

Thanks in advance

Take this to a local broker (not swinton) for advice.

May I ask why not why not swinton, as I was just on the phone to them

He always says that in his posts, and it is very, very irritating.
We use Swintons for our commercial and vehicle insurance, and they are very good, friendly and cooperative.

If the forum has a "no naming and shaming" policy then it should be enforced. Mindlessly repeating the mantra "Not Swintons, not Swintons" without any kind of explanation or justification is just puerile, like "Hellfrauds" or "W H Smug".

Swinton could not help anyway. It appears flood risk is now more of a problem then the criminal record

I decided never to use Swinton when their local branch manager came in to my bank branch to buy buildings and contents insurance for himself.

That was 11 years ago though.

If you are happy with the t&cs that Swinton give you then go ahead ( but read carefully and make sure you understand what they are offering you).

Swinton probably have a bad reputation on here (personally I would not use them again) but they are cheap and I'm sure a lot of people use them - there may be many happy customers?

    Maybe try as an alternative

I think this is quite smart. He may not have wanted other members of staff to be able to view his policy details at the drop of a hat. Also if he wanted to make any changes it's probably best that it is carried out by someone he knows as it could cause questions

How do you know they couldn't help?

Ok sometimes Swintons customer service leaves a lot to be desired but on the whole most branches are ok and there are other brokers out there that are just as bad if not worst

Is Switnon classed as a "broker" these days?

It never used to be. Best description at the time of my experience was limited panel with a leaning towards its own white-label products.

Is it now sourcing from the whole market?

In this case he knows they were no help because he had phoned them before reading the post advising not to!
