connecting to the mains drainage system

Options
We have a septic tank and the soak away is failing - we believed its collapsed. Its been there for a number of years and the onion shaped tank has been there for the same amount. Previous to us living here it was a single person or couple. We are a family of 5 and seriously considering connecting to the mains, and thinking of the future with 2 girls who will be bathing/showering/washing hair etc for many years to come!

We have a good friend who works for the water authority who will check the exact location of the mains for us so we know where it will be. The main cost we will have is the connection (we own the fields surrounding the house and we have a mate with a digger) and of course the buying of the pipes.

I'm just wandering if anyone out there has recently been connected to the mains and roughly the cost of it?

Many thanks.
