Lamb!

My husband works with someone who runs a farm and we have been offered a whole lamb for £80. I adore lamb (but can rarely afford it) and wondered if this was a good deal and also what meals I can cook with it. This would have to last us a whole month (not necessarily 30 days worth but I wouldn't be buying any more meat for the month) so I am keen to know what I could cook besides hot pot, lamb pie, lamb stew/casserole. Any ideas would be welcome

Sorry, can't say whether it's good value but I certainly wouldn't want to eat lamb (much though I love it) for a month. I'd only go for it if I had a range of other meats in the freezer and could spread out eating it over months.
I never understand (unless lacking facilities) why people cook a huge pot of something then eat it for days. When I batch cook I always portion it up and eat one every week (or two) over several weeks.
Any chance you could share the cost with friends/family?0 -

We have got some other meat in the freezer so it wouldn't be lamb every meat eating day but it would be the bulk of the meat eaten that month. I couldn't face eating the same meal for days on end!0 -
At this time of year I would guess its not going to be too small ........I bought one once i was swear was the size of a cat lol
You should be getting chops , roasting joints , mince?Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -
My local Dobbies does half a lamb for £50, so I think you have a bargain!
How many of you are there?
You would have 2 legs - maybe cut these in two so you have four joints?
2 shoulders - maybe get one boned and rolled?
chops
Offal - 2 kidneys, heart, liver.
2 breasts
Neck fillets0 -
lamb curry, stew, shepherds pie, kebabs, burgers, sounds like a good price but im no expert, might be worth a google to see what kind of weight of meat you might get from a lamb this time of year, then see how much it is at the butchers/supermarket per pound/kilo, might give you a better idea, hth xOne day I will live in a cabin in the woods0

Thanks for the reply - he has given us various meats before and they have always been excellent value (including venison and 3 rabbits for free - you can't get much better value than that!).
There are 2 adults and a 2 year old with a very small appetite so I should be able to make it stretch quite well, especially as any meat joint I ever buy I make last for at least 2-3 meals.0 -
I'd snap it up!!{Signature removed by Forum Team}0

Blimey, I've just heard that it fills 2 black sacks!
That's probably about the same amount of lamb I have eaten in the last 10 years0 -
Mmmm lamb shanks (use the slow cooker)
I'd try and make some room in the freezer so you don't get too lambed out

Last whole lamb I bought was £90 so sounds like a good deal. Ours lasted us a year in the freezer. Good time for buying lamb too as they are bigger and tastier now than earlier in the season but not yet too 'muttony'.
I did 2 half leg joints and 2 half shoulder joints and diced the other leg and shoulder for curry/ stew/ tagine etc. Minced the breast and various other bits and cut the loin into chops though you could do this as a rack joint too. Each roasted joint usually did enough for a full meal plus lo for shepards pie, pilau with nuts and dried fruit or koftas/ rissoles.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.
