Safety at Streetworks and Road Works a code of practice
This will show you how much of a restraint is put on us and will maybe help you understand better how we are LEGALLY obliged to set out roadworks

    Thank you for this information.

I find the following extract from page 56 most interesting:
Works at or near traffic signal controlled junction or pedestrian crossing
Extreme care must be taken to avoid stationary traffic tailing back through a signal controlled junction or pedestrian crossing. When you are carrying out any works in a location where this may be the case, the highway authority must be consulted.
In these circumstances it might be necessary for the traffic signal at the junction or crossing to be turned off, in which case alternative means of controlling traffic and pedestrians, as appropriate, must be agreed with the highway authority and put in place.
So why is this advice so often ignored?

Most occasions when I am held up by roadworks, it is because the tailbacks go right across busy traffic light controlled junctions, causing absolute chaos. Where is the supervisor, manager, or other competent person then?
  • Dave , you are now armed with all the information you need . If you ever feel something is not right in roadworks in the first instance , as a courtesy , why not ask to speak to the streetworks supervisor for that site who may be able to help . Failing that you can ring the council and ask to speak to the highways inspector for that particular area who will investigate on your behalf
