Replacing iPhone Battery

Evening MSE-ers,

OK so an iPhone probably isn't what I'd call money saving but I've had mine for over 3 years now - so I'm out of contract and paying just over £8 per month on SIM only.

However after daily use (phone calls being in the minority!) the battery on my iPohne 4 is draining quite quickly. I have tried turning off various features to save juice but I think a new battery is going to be needed fairly soon.

So the apple shop want about £55! They kindly say that is the price of the battery and they will fit for free. But having done some googling it seems batteries can be obtained for not much over £10 and can be fitted at home (albeit it with a suitable screwdriver).

Has anyone done this? Is it easy enough? Importantly, where is the best place to get hold of a genuine battery?

Ta, G.

When I had an iPhone 4, I replaced the battery after two years based on the excellent guidance in this video:

I bought a battery (including tools) on eBay for around £10. I opted to pay a little more to a UK-based seller who was boasting about his batteries being genuine (and explaining why) rather than paying £4 or less to one of the Chinese sellers.

    Hi NFH,

Sorry to drag up an old thread but could you provide the link to the seller please?

And secondly, has the battery proved itself?

I changed my girlfriends battery a few months ago and its worse than the one I replaced!

I've tried different chargers etc and I'm pretty sure its just the battery again.

If i can find a trusted seller of one I'll use them.

    Cheers

I bought it from Frederick at helpingu2save on eBay and it has lasted very well. I asked him questions before I bought it and his answers about the authenticity of his batteries were convincing.

    This is a money-saving site, not a hassle-saving site.

    Cheers.

    I'll look into that then.

I'm getting less than a day out of normal use now so it's needed ASAP.

Re the above comment about direct from Apple, do they actually sell replacements?
I had a quick look on their site but couldn't see one and I'd assume they wouldn't be very happy about you opening up their products and doing their engineers out of a job buy doing it yourself????

If you think that a small lithium battery is worth any where near £50, then you are easily duped. You can currently buy whole smartphones (including battery) for half that amount.

I still haven't got round to getting one yet! But I did research it and this looked like the best option for an OEM one...
