  • New day and fresh start.

After a long wallow, a lot of tears to a friend down the phone last night and a half decent sleep I'm feeling a little bit better today. A plan is in place for the weekend ahead that'll mean a little escape from normality and no spending. My parents live a few miles away but being village dwellers it's a whole different world (very patchy internet and limited phone signal for a start!) So I'm taking all the kids to stay tomorrow night. My parents are aware of the situation. They're not able to help and I wouldn't accept but it's a couple of days out of my normal routine. No opportunity to spend (one village shop that closes early) and a chance to be mollycoddled. My mum will ply me with cake and chocolate and my dad will ply me with alcohol and James Bond on DVD.

I think it'll do me good to rest, be looked after and providing the leg behaves itself get out into the surrounding fields with their dog for some country air. they're excited about it and although it'll be a squeeze for sleeping I'm looking forward to getting away. .

I'm still feeling a bit wobbly after so aside from checking my bank I'm not on the debt busting trail yet but a few cuppas and I'm certain I'll be back on track. Watch this space...

  • Wow! The difference a couple of days makes! I'm writing this as I tuck into my breakfast and I'm looking forward to getting work done and getting away.

Another NSD is planned but upon checking my bank that's a good thing as my account is empty until Monday. I feel totally fine about that. I've got £3 in my purse but there's food in the kitchen and fuel in the car so what do I actually need? Nothing! The bills are paid there will be money for grocery shopping on Monday and I have weekend plans that won't cost a penny.

I've still not told the small children we're going. A trip to my parents is usually a couple of hours a couple of times a month and they're always begging to stay so we're waiting until they ask. It'll be a real treat for them.

Now I just need to get my backside moving, get the work day done and enjoy a full weekend with my family.

  • I'm back online :) Not home yet but will be leaving in the next hour or so.

The break has done me the world of good. I'm feeling refreshed and rested and nothing seems insurmountable now. I'd been thinking far too much and over analysing every area of my life. Nothing clears out all the chatter like being on the top of a hill, surrounded by fields and trying to not fall face first into the mud!

I haven't a penny to my name until tomorrow and I feel fantastic! My leg is near the top end of the pain scale so I'm currently sat on the bed watching a Christmas movie with my youngest. We've been to the park today and just waiting for the roast beef to be ready.

The bad feelings have taken a lot of effort to beat down but they are suppressed for now and I'm focusing on the fact that I've now paid £930 off this month, I'm up to 6 NSDs and the totals are slowly getting smaller.

Christmas is still not far from my mind. Two paydays to go and I know exactly what I want. I want to see one of those smaller CCs at zero. Given the lengths I've gone to already it's perfectly possible without scrimping too much. I'm supposed to be paying 400 per month off but I've more than doubled that! And how fantastic would my Christmas be if I can wake on the big day thinking I only have 3 CCs to pay off in 2014?

I'm all for looking ahead (especially now the light at the end of the tunnel is shining brightly again). Every day I'm sticking to budget is a small step towards debt freedom. I've always been a competitive person and my favourite challenge is to smash a goal I've set myself by doing it sooner so I'm thinking ahead and I've got this slightly insane idea that I can have these cards paid off before hubby's next birthday...4 paydays early! (Would be 3 paydays but his birthday is 3 days before my July payday). I'd absolutely love to hand him four cleared statements but my thoughts have changed so much that this isn't a necessity for me. It's perfectly possible but if I'm not at that point who will be hurt? No one! Doesn't hurt to have a dream but it's a safe bet that in 8 months I can be under half what I owe right now.

This journey has taught me so much already and I'm finally grasping that it's okay to make mistakes, it's okay to move the goalposts and it's okay to not be the fastest/best/strongest at EVERYTHING. In fact I'm a pretty good version of me and that's something to be proud of.

    Hi Kate

I've just read your diary and it has given me a "shot in the arm" , especially the bit about making mistakes and being proud of being you :T.

Personally, I've been "on the road" since 2009 and am still reeling from the news this week that my pay will be cut by 11% from January 2016 due to "re-grading". BUT, I will keep going and live to fight another day..Thank you for your encouraging, positive posts. :)

Thanks Chrisblue. It's the camaraderie and inspirational posters like you that are keeping me going. I'm so sorry you've had the awful news of the pay cut. I'm only just starting out but I really believe I can do this. It's a huge revelation for me to realise the date of the final payment isn't the only thing I should think about. I've been so down on myself this week but I'm not helping anything by being negative.

You are doing so well! Over 12% cleared already and still striding strongly along the trail. Stories like yours give me hope that when I hit a bump in the road there WILL be a way around it to the finish line, I know it won't all be a smooth run into debt freedom and in a way I don't want it to be easy as I simply won't learn.

I've got one eye on the end prize and the other firmly in the here and now storing away what I've learned and relishing each little success.

I wish you every bit of luck in reaching your goal and will be following your posts and cheering you on.

  • I'm feeling all feisty and debt-buster-y again :) TBH I feel like I've got some fight back in me so new (additional) plans which I'm writing here so the whole world knows and then I have to do it :)

    1. I'm pretty sure I've never had any PPI but I have had loans so for the price of a few stamps its worth a shot at claiming something back. I won't be any worse off by trying.

    2. I'm ashamed to admit that I've been racking up bank charges like they're a fashion accessory! As above, I won't be losing anything if I try to claim some back.

    3. I'm spending so much time stressing about money. My employer is funding a study course and I've been far too laid back about it. The irony is not lost on me that it's an accountancy course and whilst I have no problem dealing with serious money at work I have made huge errors managing my own! I will spend at least one 3 hour session a week studying. It'll (eventually) increase my income and it's one evening each week when my mind is focused elsewhere.

    4. I will chase up the dodgy letting agent that kept £150 of a deposit/registration fee for a house they couldn't provide. They'd be chasing me if I owed them!

1, 2 and 4 can be letters I can write in my lunch break tomorrow. Maybe nothing will come of it but I'll be no worse off by trying, I won't be sat here wondering and just maybe there will be a bit of a payout towards the debts.

There's still life in this old dog yet and where there's life there's hope! And while I'm on a clich! roll...this old dog has definitely learned some new tricks, time to push on ahead and see what life offers.
