Santander 123 current account rejection?!

Hi there,

My partner has just found out, after first applying 6 weeks ago (7 dayswitch my ****!), that he has been rejected from a Santander 123 currentaccount, and we have no idea why.

He earns £35k per year, has no debt, no missed payments, no dependents, ahigh in credit balance, and savings. He isn't young, so has built up a credithistory.

I am in the process of switching, having been accepted with very similarcircumstances, so I cannot see how he has been rejected.

Does anyone know of any other reasons!? It just seems so odd to me.

The only thing I can think of, is that he initially applied online, but thenhad to wait for his new passport to arrive. He decided to go into the branch toshow his ID, where the assistant said he would close his online application andopen a new one in branch, as it would be much quicker. That was 2 weeks ago,and he hadn't heard anything back, despite repeated calls to the branch. Hefinally got through to them today where they said that both the firstapplication had remained open and he'd been rejected. Could it be that applyingtwice (although this wasn't his fault) could have caused his rejection?! Hehasn't had any letters, only what he was told over the phone, so he has noother information.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as we're hoping to apply for amortgage soon, and him being rejected for something as simple as a currentaccount is a crushing blow, and will be a slight on his credit report. Thewhole thing has been a palaver from start to finish, I wish we'd neverbothered!

Thank you!! :j

  • Have you applied for a copy of his credit history with Equifax, Experian or similar?
That will show you if there is something on his record that you need to dispute.
Can get these credit standings not only for free but with cashback.
Read the MSE guidance on this site.
    Best.

A bank can reject you for whatever reason they please (might have nothing to do with your credit report), and they don't have to state that reason.

The only legal right you have is to a single, basic bank account.

That said, the rejection will not be seen by other lenders, only the credit search, if they even did one.

I wouldn't fight it, just apply somewhere else. If you get another rejection then something is obviously wrong.

Have both applications been rejected, or is it just the first (online) one because he hasn't provided ID within 30 days of Santander requesting it?

May be worth making an appointment to see an advisor in the branch (the counter staff are a bit hit&miss).
  • Thank you very much for your responses!

He's going to sign up for the Experian report tomorrow (the agency they state they use).

All they said on the phone was that he'd been rejected, and that they would send a letter in the post within 10 days, but I doubt that would state a reason. I've told him he should definitely go back to the branch to discuss further, but I don't know if they'll be able to help other than saying that it was the underwriter's decision and they don't know why. It is possible that it's the first application that's been rejected, if him bringing his ID into branch was never registered against this, but not closed either. I guess also seeing two open applications could cause a red flag, 'computer says no' moment. It's just frustrating if this is the case, as that was what Santander advised him to do.

Anyway, we'll find out more tomorrow I guess!

Thanks again for your help :)
  • It's the branch advisors fault.

He closed the 1st app & done a new one purely to get points for himself or his branch!! Which looks dodgy anyway They still have targets & KPIs to hit.

Kick up a fuss and they may give him a account

Can second this. My partner and I made a joint application for an account and was rejected yesterday. Joint income of over £150k, no mortgages, a couple of credit cards but nothing major, no judgements, both on electoral roll etc. etc. (I'm subscribed to both Experian and Equifax and him to Experian and neither show up anything negative).

I'm considering writing to them but not sure how far it'll get us...

Maybe they're oversubscribed and weeding people out for profitability reasons but I was very annoyed yesterday as well.

That isn't for you to decide.

    This isn't the reason.

You seem to know what the reason is, so care to spill the beans?

I don't understand how you came to that conclusion. If I knew the reason I would've said it.
Based on the information provided I couldn't even reasonably guess what it might be.

I opened an account online and never had to take any ID into the branch??? Also, the account was open within a few days, not weeks!!!
