    Great, thanks for the help.

The letter is not definite, but yes we have evidence of them messing around with previous payslips that don't tally with what was paid.
Right you are paid in cash and the payslip is issued and you check it along with the money and then sign for the cash? Is this not what was happening?

If the payslips don't tally with the CASH payments then how are you going to address this?

  • If I send the P60 and pay slip to the tax office would they be prepared to help find out the reason for the differences?

The company should have a copy of the pay slips at their office - you can ask, the P60's printed would be what has been declared to HMRC.

No, payslips were not issued every week. It's the times that payslips were not issued which are causing the problem.

That's maybe what I was hoping for some help with. I'm sick of letting this employer get away with everything he got away with during the course of my partner's employment. I thought it was all over and this latest discrepancy has brought everything to the surface again.

Maybe we will just have to let it go and put it down to the naivety/stupidity of not having the courage to question it all sooner.

Sincerely, thanks everyone for the help.

The reason for the difference is the company have declared a different amount than the payslips. Easily done if they were not doing things correctly or didn't reconcile the year end

So how was salary checked with no payslip? How did you know that the pay was even taxed and had ni on it with no payslip? Cash payments too - sounds very odd.

Did he sign for every cash payment?

  • Proper pay slips were issued 90% of the time. If my partner had a day off during the week that's when he wouldn't receive a pay slip. He would receive one day's pay less (which did not include a tax reduction), eg if his normal weekly pay for 4 days (one day a week was a college day) was £180 he would receive £135. No pay slip, no tax reduction for that week. We would work this out by looking at the pay slips either side of the missing one.

He didn't sign for payments. His boss was confrontational, intimidating and a bully, which is why so many issues were let go of while he was still working there. He didn't want to jeopardise gaining his qualification.
  • I'll send the letter but change the accusatory part first. Maybe I should have waited for any anger to subside before writing it. I'll request the pay slips and see what happens. My partner thinks his old boss will just throw it in the bin anyway, which is why I may need to ask for help from the tax office.

Oh dear god, why would you not sign for cash?

No proof what you got paid, no payslip......the list goes on and now a P60 that don't add up.

At least if he signed for all the cash they can and would have to prove that they paid him each week etc and the amounts paid but now they could just say the P60 is correct.

I don't even know what to suggest

I would write a letter first asking for copies of the payslip or a statement of earnings which is just a typed letter with the week end dates and the amounts paid
From this you can tick back and see but since you say he signed for no payments if there is a mistake I cant see how you get this sorted.

If he knows what he got for each week he could write a letter to HMRC but best to call for advice first. See tax number on the P60 to get the office to call you should be able to find this online
