AMEX Gold for graduate with new job and new house

Options
Hi,

New to the forum, read a few posts but had a few questions specific to me so signed up.

Basically quite keen to sign up for the Amex gold card because of the bonus 20000 points with £2k in 3 months. With normal monthly spend plus upcoming birthdays and Xmas this is shouldn't be difficult to achieve. I was wondering though whether it's worth it as I'd rather not apply and damage my credit rating, currently a very high score with 2 different rating agencies (experian and equifax).

Basically my wife and I (both nearly 25yo if makes difference) between us earn just over £50k split almost evenly. However we have recently moved house (2 months ago) which we are renting and have both started new jobs within the the last 2 months. Previously we lived at our parents for many years at the same address so have a stable address leading up to now. She graduated from university a couple of years ago and has been working in the NHS since but I only graduated this summer but am now working for a very large and successful multinational (again not sure if employers are relevant?). I have always worked though and have years of regular income including some full time work whilst on sandwich year. We've both had credit cards and never missed payments and have had cars on finance with no issues. Both of our ratings are excellent. I'd read that charge cards aren't too difficult to be accepted for and so thought we should be ok but with the recent change of address and new jobs wasn't sure.

Whilst I realise no one can say for sure whether we'd get the card or not, is it worth applying ie, do we have a strong chance?

Thanks

  • One other thing. I have only just paid off my student overdraft and credit card in the last couple of weeks. Will this still show up on a check? Also I have been added to my wife's account which is now our joint account and has been much healthier than mine over the past couple of years as she has been out of uni in this time as mentioned. Would I be better off applying using these bank details or will the fact I've only just been added to it in the past month make a difference?

Your "ratings" given by the agencies mean nothing. Every company has their own set of rules, your score might be high because you have never defaulted or because you have low credit currently for example, but credit card company will refuse you because you will not get their "past with at least 3 credit products" rule.

I would think your chances are less then low.
New address - not on electroral roll yet, instability.
New job - instability, even probationary period still.

Oh and now I see new bank.. sorry, I would definitely wait 6 mths before you try!!
  • If I was you I wouldn't apply.

i think with all the recent changes, you could struggle to get anything.

however, if you dont plan to have any other credit any time soon, a single search now will probably make little difference.

so if it was me, i think i would just apply anyways, if it failed, just wait 6 months before trying again, by then you should have more stability, and the current searches will mean very little
  • Fair enough. I had a feeling that would be the case to be honest but thought I'd ask those who have probably got a bit more knowledge/experience. I'll wait for awhile before applying I think. Thanks for your help
