Sky HD Box

Options
My Sky HD box is pausing every few minutes until I reboot, which is rather annoying. It's then ok for a while then the cycle begins again.

While it isn't a 1TB box it is one of the newer ones and I've not had it for that long although probably > 1 year. I got it as a self-install which is still clear in my mind. I'm thinking it should last a few years right?

What is my best approach here? Will they try and charge me for a replacement 1TB box?

To be perfectly honest, if I don't get what I want I'm quite prepared to cancel but just need a heads-up.

TIA.

It isn't a 1Tb box but you ask for a 1Tb box to replace it then they'll definitely want to charge you for it because they'll see it as an upgrade.

As you say it's more than a year old the chances are that if you called about it they'd want to charge their standard fee to send an engineer out to check all the connections and the box (I believe it's about £60).

Some people have reported some success with getting the fee waived by phoning up to quit and when asked why saying because the box is on the blink but I've never tried that so I can't vouch for whether it will work or not.

Before getting in touch with Sky, have a go at a planner rebuild (Google it) to see if that solves the problem. If not, power supply is a common problem that can cause all sorts of random behaviour, or the hard drive on the way out could give your symptoms.
As above, 'my box is broken, I'm leaving' might get you a free, refurbished, replacement.

Yes, but only the same model -not an upgraded version of course.

Or if that doesn't work, you could probably pick up a replacement 2nd hand box online for around £30.

But try the "I'm thinking of leaving as my box is broken" line first, might result in getting a new (or more likely refub) box

Sky have first asked me to perform a software upgrade on my box, happy to oblige and take it from there
    .
I googled for a guide but it's a bit unclear if I need to press backup on remote or on box? Does it matter? I'm guessing the press backup and standby at ther same time both on the box is just for convenience. Anyhow, tried it and it didn't work, I couldn't get all the LED lights to appear at the same time.

A wee step-by-step guide would be good if anyone knows, thanks very much.

My newly installed box had problems (freezing overnight and during some playback). As it was only a few days old, the engineer replaced it with another new one, but said it was probably just a software problem (He made sure the replacement had the latest version), as Sky are aware that there is a software problem.

    1. Switch off the box at the mains.
    2. Hold down, and keep holding down, the backup button on the digibox (not the remote) as you switch on again at the mains.
    3. When all 3 of the front LED's light up, let go of the backup button and the update will start (you should see a white text warning message on screen). It'll take 10-15 minutes and will leave the box in standby (red light only).
    4. Wait another 3 minutes and then press 'Sky' on your handset to re-start the box.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
