Not impressed with O2

2 week I purcharsed a cheap Samsung Galaxy and put in an O2 sim pay-as-you-go.

Since purchase I have had the phone switched off but switched it on yesterday to find O2 had "given" me (their words) 50Mb of data until midnight of the day of the text and deducted £1 from my balance.

So ..

Not made a phonecall, not sent a text or consumed a single byte of data. Just having the phone switched off apparently entitles O2 to deduct £1 per day from my pay-as-you-go balance.

This is my first mobile phone, now I know why I haven't dived in to this technology. One Samsung Galaxy (used) now available on eBay. I don't need this, erm, rubbish.

Sorry, can you clarify, have they deducted £1 in total, or have they deducted more than £1 in total?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

My guess would be you have left your phone with data turned on in the settings .....when you turned your phone on an app or something tried to connect you to the internet, hence you will be charged £1 which gives you 50mb per day assuming you don't have data included in your bundle.

The solution is to turn data off on the phone ;)
It's not just about the money
  • Has the phone looked for upgrades and used some data, which has automatically resulted in being charged for data use?
  • I agree with Silk.
Most likely you did use data when you turned on the phone. On smartphones data usage happens even if you don't open the browser as pre-installed apps will still transmit data in the background to send notifications etc.
There's no need to sell the phone, as whatever other smartphone you get will do this, unless you disable mobile data in the settings.

As above you really need to learn how to use the phone whatever model it is no point blaming O2 .
All smartphones are internet connected unless you turn mobile data off .
All smartphones will update apps using either mobile data if on or wifi if not .First day or two its normal for apps to update on a new phone as updates have been released since the day of build .
I am just updating a new phone and its taking a fair amount of data .

I lost all my data the first month in to the phone updating itself too- lesson learnt! I switched the data off and then went to each app I could (they show in a list if you go to setting and then data) and force all of them to only update or work on wifi and only on wifi. I've not had the problem since though you do have to remember to turn them on if you need to use them and are not in a wifi area or want to update them and are in a free wifi area.

It's a new handset, chalk it up to experience and read up on the data issue so it doesn't happen again. Sadly some of the most memorable lessons I've learnt are from bad experiences!
