    What car please?

Might be my next purchase as mine won't get near that! :)

34mpg in an automatic petrol, let lone a sporty one from cold is extremely impressive, if true.

If based from the read out from the cars computer, how accurate is the reading? Most MPG readouts are inaccurate.

Interesting point. There presumably must be a difference in the emissions following a DPF removal (or car manufacturers wouldn't fit them in the first place), but at present the MOT test emissions test isn't suitable to detect this, is that right? The solution would seem to be better emissions testing equipment, but I guess the cost would be prohibitive?

    Yeah, that's pretty much it.

Since when has a remap been illegal?

Since the quote below, with the outlined bit.
Illegal in a way that no one is likely to ever be prosecuted for it though

Letter from Department of Transport dated 1 May 2013:

Under the Construction and Use Regulations (more specifically, Regulation 61A of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations) it is illegal to use a vehicle on the road if it has been modified in such a way that it no longer meets the air quality emissions standards that it had to when originally produced. The law does not forbid modification of the emissions control equipment. It forbids modification that makes the vehicle emit more pollutant than it is permitted to by virtue of the standard to which it was originally approved. Also, that under 8.2.1.1 (petrol) and 8.2.2.1 (diesel) of the Testing Directive 2010/48 now applicable in the UK, a vehicle can be failed if any part of the emission control is absent, modified or obviously defective. However, please note the MOT test is a visual inspection that does not include dismantling of a vehicle or its components.

Hence why i'm asking what car ;)

My 2.3 turbo (OK its a manual not an auto) petrol does 15mpg round town. Our other car - a mondeo 2.0 TDCI estate will only get around 32mpg stop / starting around town and thats an economical diesel, so I find it hard to believe 34mpg from a petrol auto around town.

On a motorway run however, its entirely possible :)

If true, we'd all have one. :p

I averaged 38mpg driving 20 miles in rush hour this morning on A and B roads.

    Mind you I was in a manual 1.4 with 70 bhp. :)

    Chrysler 300C and Kia Sportage.

    Same here Gloomendoom
I run a 2008 Passat 2.0tdi and average just under 10,000 / year but my average run to work is 3.5 miles through the centre of Bradford. Never any problem and average overall for last 2 years is 41.2mpg on a run 60+ is no real problem.
Our petrol car (Volvo S40 1.6) averages less than 30mpg so a 30% saving over petrol.

    Mini Cooper S 2007-
37 MPG is the official combined figure for the manual, dunno if there's an auto.
170BHP and stacks of torque in a little car is fun!

Did you possibly mean that the official urban figure is 37 mpg? There are so many variants of the Cooper S it is hard to be sure, but the ones I've looked at quickly have combined economy figures that are about 10 mpg higher than that.

The problem of course is the gulf between the official figures and what you get in the real world:

Not surprisingly the automatic gives lower mpg than the manual too.

Oh dear Ultrasonic, thanks for that - yeah it must be the urban figure. I'm either stuck in traffic in the rush hour, doing short journeys to the train, or driving 'enthusiastically' whilst trying to be economical in between. I know that my driving pattern is closest aligned with the urban figure, so that's the one I pay attention to, and somewhere in between I've forgotten that's what it was. Thanks for the correction, and an auto Cooper S looks like a great car for the question.
