GiffGaff vs Tesco Mobile for low PAYG use

Hi, I hardly use my mobile phone so just have a PAYG sim. I am currently on o2 but giffgaff and tesco mobile offer better sim only value. I won't save that much due to low useage but something saved is better than nothing. I was on 02 to get a discount on my broadband with them but Sky broadband have bought them out so it doesn't matter any more.

Last time I checked giffgaff and tesco mobile charges for texts and calls were the same.

Is there a reason to prefer one over the other? - eg customer service, ease of transferring your existing number etc

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I wouldn't going for a goodybag package or similar just basic PAYG. Don't need any mobile internet. Just for a few texts and rare calls.

Actually checkng tesco charges again I think giffgaff is cheaper (they were the same not so long ago) unless I'm missing something about how often you need to top up. I dom't want to have to top up anymore than I need to.

    I have an unlocked phone.

So giff gaff is probably the way to go.

    Do you mean Tesco Lite?
    Why giffgaff or Tesco only?
Three's 123 and Ovivo Freedom are worth considering too IMO.

You might also want to consider Toggle Mobile if you want to pay the same as you do in the UK (including no charge for incoming calls) when you go abroad.

Tesco Lite has been discontinued for new customers so you are left with Giff Gaff, Asda (when they switch to EE in November), Sainsburys and the others mentioned by other posters.
Tesco's current price is 25p a minute and 10p a text so they are not so competitive for low users any more.

Most PAYG tariffs don't expire as long as you use the phone to make a chargeable call or text at least once in every six months.

I have not checked though if it works.
  • I found that Tesco were not opening new Lite accounts when checking the Tesco Lite PAYG call charges page on their website.
    At the top it says
***Please note this tariff is no longer available to new customers***

If you can get your phoned unlocked (assuming it is locked of course) and Vodaphones signal is ok for you then you should seriously consider Ovivo.

My partner was with O2 for many years but got her phoned unlocked for free by O2 (this can be done online) and then switched to Ovivo. She only uses it for voice and texting so internet reception is not a concern to her.

It's a one off charge of £20 and you get 150 minutes of talktime, 250 texts and 500 m/b of data every month (refreshed every month) at no further cost. As with most other companies you have to pay to send such things as picture messages or make calls abroad etc but this comes out of your £20.

Thank you all. There are some options I hadn't spotted before. I will look into them all. My phone is unlocked as I bought in on ebay so can go to anyone. And hopefully retaining my current number will be reasonably smooth.

Will check whether vodaphone or o2 network is better in my area (or if no difference).
