    Morning DFW-Jedis,

Woke up s'morning not knowing what day or time it was! I'm tired and disorientated so I have cut a deal with my tuff . She's going to the supermarkets in the pouring rain and I'm doing all the housework in the warm house. :rotfl:

    Foxgloves:
I totally agree. This DFW stuff takes HOURS.

    The List:

    :D Checked online banking.

:D Last night we got last minute half price concert tickets for a big name playing at our local arts centre. Fabulous. Took our own munchies with us. Free parking. Short journey. First time we've paid for tickets in a long time, usually get vouchers for them.

:D Also splurged out on a chinese takeaway delivery. The first in six months. Cooked our own rice, though, as didn't want to pay £4 for 20p's worth of rice.

:D OH snaffled cardboard box for posting parcel from supermarket.

    :D Made £3.08 selling a broken printer.

  • For a while, our upstairs loo has not been flushing properly. So, we checked on the interweb and found the cause of the problem - a faulty siphon.

Got the part from our local DIY emporium , which cost about £6.00 and after`watching a very helpful video on Youtube, we fitted the new siphon, which only took an hour.

Not the biggest DIY project but saved us a few pounds compared to calling a plumber to do it. We are now drinking a celebratory cuppa :)

Nice day....well, not the weather, which has just started blowing a gale & wazzing down with rain.....but we popped into town for a little anniversary treat of a cappuccino & cakeypoo. It's a proper treat now we're not buying them all the time.
Today's small positive things.......which are truly tiny today:
*Used WHSmith 20% off discount card to buy a couple of birthday cards.
*Needed 2 festive gift bags - found some nice ones in 'Card Factory' at 4 for £1.
*Bought own brand multi-vitamin/mineral tablets instead of the much more expensive branded ones.
*Started mobile phone research as we are now out of contract & have a couple of glitches we'd now like to sort out. mr f concentrated on phone/contract spec, I did some number crunching, looking at our current actual costs (rather than basic contract costs) so we could make a valid comparison. Took ages......(ally...glad you agree with me on the amount of time it takes being dfw & it's not just me.....) mr f has been going over his data limit which this last month has increased his basic contract price of £12-47 a month to over £30. He is convinced he doesn't actively use these functions enough to warrant such an increase in data use, so thinks the cost is coming from background updating. He's got a bee in his bonnet about it now & is going to monitor data use daily online this week to check what's going on. Found a good deal on different network we may well switch to, anyway.
*Finish knitting first half of Christmas Present no.7 (a.k a 1 stripy patterned sock!) so can free up the needles needed to knit little socks for friend's baby (the old me would have spent £4+ on another set of sock needles).
*Found little pull-out tape measure in Heart Foundation charity shop for £1. I nearly spend £5-99 on one in London last month. Felt rosy glow of virtue.
*Just going upstairs in a minute to fetch warmer cardigan. No heating on yet, but this is the chilliest I've felt so far as there's a gale blowing through the cat flap & we are very open plan downstairs.
*Did not go in Monsoon, or Phase Eight, or the wool shop, nor did I buy anything in Waitrose except the vitamins.
Take care in the coming storm, esp driving to work on Mon when there may be trees/debris down. Torch & candles ready just in case of a power cut. Christmas Tree moved to sheltered corner so it doesn't blow over & snap before Yuletide festivities!
    Cheers for now,

2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
    2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!

What a horrible day! Weather is horrid and very chilly, blankies out here but no heating on yet.
Went shopping to Sainsbugs after stocktake yesterday so just needed 'bits' until next weekend. Went armed with list and used nectar points to pay £17.50 bill leaving me with £1.32 to pay in cash, very pleased with that as I had three bags of shopping.
DS brought home two bags of YS parsnips and a bag of cauliflower home for the princely sum of 53p am thinking soup or veg crumble?
Half way through budgeting for the year........not looking good.

    Have a lovely evening

  • Evening campers!

So I have been awol again, as everything went a little crazy after the cistern incident. LL rather unhappy at our explanation of spontaneous, unassisted self-destruction and I can't really blame him. Took a few days to get the offending pipe valved off but it is valved now. Awaiting news on replacement cistern...

The positive upshot of the entire fiasco is that my dad rang me and offered to loan us £10k for a house deposit. :A

The terms of the loan are such that he doesn't want us to start paying him until 5 years time, which is also very kind of him.

The result of this is that we are on super saving mode (or at least I am in practical terms!) so that we can scrape together as much as possible to cover things like solicitors, stamp duty etc etc...

With that in mind, here are today's things. I usually only post DFW things, but I from now on I am also going to post where things go a bit awry so that I can see it in black and white and you can childe me kindly to keep me on the straight and narrow!

    Good DFW things
    • Did housework with cheap, frugal cleaning products
    • Free Milicano coffee
    • Two lots of washing almost line dried in windy weather. Brought inside just to finish off on rack by dehumidifier
    • Made an apple, pear and plum cake to use up fruit that was starting to go a bit squidgy.
    • B/L from stores
    • Finished m-i-l's birthday scarf. Used cheap glittery yarn from stash. Hope that internet method for softening cheap yarn works.
    • Cut all of the chillies off the plants, chopped up and froze.
    • Washed pillows on most delicate wash with reduced spin as OH bit his mouth in the night and bled everywhere :( As per usual, one pillow has come out the right shape and the other is a twisted mess. Cut open outer case to straighten.
    • Heating STILL off. Not cold at all yet!
    • Found the number for OH's travel insurance on saynoto0870
    Not so good things

    • OH needed 9 volt batteries for musical equipment. He can get these for £1.50 each at uni but a lack of planning and foresight meant that had to buy 2 for £7.35  at Tesco
    • Feeling very lazy after busy day and considering ordering in for tea. Head justifying it to myself that this will be the last one before the saving starts. Really should get my brain in gear and think of something for dinner though as have plenty of food :o I even went on the supercook website and am still not inspired...
Right, that's a good confessional start! I plan to pull myself up by my socks and actually post every day. You have been warned ;)
