When we start out on the Debt-Free Wannabe trail we do loads of "big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the Gym.

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free...

Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending. :money:

Moooorrrrnnnninggggg! :D Saturday again :j woohoo! Been up for a little while pottering around, really should get dressed at some point! Weather forecast is grim for here for the next couple of days.

Last night was very naughty & had a Chinese, was lovely though! And we decided not to buy a bottle of wine and had a few ciders from the stores instead so little saving :D

My plans for the day:
* [STRIKE]texted friend about meeting up[/STRIKE]
* [STRIKE]checked banking [/STRIKE]
* [STRIKE]paid something off of cc[/STRIKE]
* [STRIKE]paid money into ISA[/STRIKE]
* [STRIKE]hung up a load of washing on heated dryer and put another load in[/STRIKE]
* [STRIKE]texted person who my dd bought a washing machine off of about going to collect later today[/STRIKE]
* yesterday's salmon risotto for dinner tonight
* [STRIKE]Pork joint out of freezer for dinner tomorrow[/STRIKE]
* need to go a couple of hours of work :( needs to be done, although I really do resent working at the weekends! I am now down to my last week so LOADS to do. Am at 5/6 weeks :T
* reconcile spreadsheet with the last week's spends
[STRIKE]* mobile mechanic coming to repair oh's car in a bit :wink:[/STRIKE]
* heating off/jumpers on
* vacuum & polish upstairs, clean bathroom
* return very dress
* [STRIKE]transfer food from indoor freezer to chest freezer in shed and defrost. Must to this today!
[/STRIKE]
Possibly go out for a few drinks tonight as we didn't last night

Last night we watched World War Z with Brad Pitt. Really great film, recommend it highly!

Ok so I should get on now. Have a great Saturday guys x

    Morning all, :wave:

    Thanks for the kick-off DNM.

    The List:

    :D
    Called Tax Credits Helpline to claim WTC. Only took ten mins; a miracle!

    :D Checked online banking.

    :D Free sports massage from OH.

    :D Set up free mobile text alerts for my bank account to tell me when a certain limit is reached or if my card is used overseas.

    :D Got last minute concert tickets at £10 each not £22!

    :D Entertainment: Listen to CDs I haven't played for ages instead of buying new ones.

    Bored and looking for free entertainment?

    This is something I'm involved in which is keeping me away from online shopping! I figured I might as well help solve a real mystery rather than doing puzzles for pure entertainment.

    There is an opportunity to volunteer to help a team of Archaelogists piece back the fragmented face of the Hilton of Cadboll stone via your PC. This is basically a 3D jigsaw puzzle and the team
    need help to piece this Pictish Puzzle back together. Here's some more about it.

    The magnificent Pictish cross-slab from Hilton of Cadboll in Easter Ross, carved between 700 & 800 AD, stood on land now owned by the Glenmorangie company. It is on display as the centre-piece to the Early People gallery at the National Museum of Scotland. At some point the slab broke away from its base, and its Pictish cross-face was chipped off. Then before AD 1676 this face was re-carved as an (unused!) headstone for Alexander Duff and his 3 wives. Recent excavations at the Hilton of Cadboll chapel site, where the stone originally stood, uncovered the upright base in the ground and over 3,000 scattered fragments of the original cross-face.

    In 2010 The Glenmorangie Research Project CT-scanned and created 3D digital models of the re-discovered fragments. Using these virtual fragments we can piece back together the missing cross-face...a job larger than one person.

    The Pictish Puzzle uses WebGL, which is available on the latest versions of Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari (WebGL must be enabled in Safari preferences), Internet Explorer (requires a plug-in called Chromeframe from Google).

    ally - That archaeological puzzle sounds fascinating. There's an ongoing archaeological exploration going on in our village at the moment, which any of us locals are able to join in with. I haven't yet, but have been to some of the free talks, displays, etc. Love the idea of fieldwalking, but think they're beyond that now & are taking cores & digging.
    2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
    2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
    Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!

    Morning Weekend money savers,
    Honestly, how LONG does this staying solvent business take?! Started work on all this month's financial stuff at 10.30 a.m & only just finished it. Better than the alternative though, I couldn't go back to the stress of not knowing if my card would be declined, living out of a permanent overdraft while spend, spend, spending.....
    Today's small positive things:
    *Shared bath water.
    *Finished free knitting kit (from magazine)- a plump Christmas robin, & cast on an extra Christmas present using yarn from stash.
    *Made lentil soup in the slow cooker, using frozen home made ham stock.
    *Made sage & onion stuffing using breadcrumbs from my freezer box.
    *Did a very few surveys.
    *Entered 4 competitions.
    *Uploaded energy meter readings. No sign of end/Oct bill yet, so unable to tell yet if we've managed to wipe out the running debit we had on our account since last winter. Hope so!
    *Tweaked shopping dates to make use of Sainsbury's £6 off voucher. mr f volunteered to get shopping on way home from work & says he'll go round with his calculator.
    *Checked online banking to ensure all October's payments went out correctly.
    *Paid credit card in full (only use it for petrol, which we have to buy anyway, so may as well get the free M&S vouchers).
    *Did November's budget. Nice to see we are still solvent, but it's hard work......if I took my eye off the ball, I know we'd start drifting into bad habits again. We just spent too many years being baaaaaad to the bone :-)
    *Paid agreed monthly amounts into Piggies. (Think piggybanking is working, still a bit early to tell, but nice to know we've at least a bit saved towards coming car service).
    *Listened to Radio 4 Moneybox programme as it was covering ethical alternatives now that Co-op Bank is part-owned by hedgefunds. Concluded that there are virtually no like-for-like alternatives, so will stay put for the time being to see what happens.
    *Checked through new Home & Contents Insurance docs to make sure it matched what I thought I was buying. It did.
    *Huge filing session for financial stuff.
    *Decided to stay in tomorrow. It's our wedding anniversary. Rather than pay for a meal out, we have planned a nice meal in, film night by candlelight & only extra expense is a bottle of cava & a few bits for me to make a nice dessert. Result!
    *Made a list of items still to buy for Christmas presents, most of which are quite small/inexpensive & we have left plenty of time to shop around.
    *Batten down the hatches! Forecast looks grim for tomorrow. We are right on the dividing line between 'Awful' & 'Pretty awful' so will prepare for the worst to be on the safe side! Take care all of you down in the South East.
    *Still no heating on, except for bathroom heater just first thing.
    Right, off to make a cup of tea now, with the hot water I saved in a flask from the last drink. Have a good weekend, everyone.
