Updates finish in April next year. Will we all have to migrate to 7/8 or will the Anti-virus, Antimalware and spybots be good enough to keep us safe?
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

The merchants of doom and those who stand to make financial gain will say the world will end with a multitide of zero day exploits. Well zero day and any exploits only get exploited if you hit a site that has been infected AND your AV doesn't detect it.
backup, use a virus scanner, if the world does end, put the backup back on, and carry on.!!

Extending Chrome support for XP users until April 2015
On April 8, 2014, after more than a decade of powering many of the world’s computers, Windows XP will officially retire. Like all technologies that come to their end-of-life, the XP operating system and most of its desktop applications will no longer receive updates and security patches. Since unpatched browser bugs are often used by malware to infect computers, we’re extending support for Chrome on Windows XP, and will continue to provide regular updates and security patches until at least April 2015.
We recognize that hundreds of millions of users, including a good chunk of current Chrome users, still rely on XP. Moreover, many organizations still run dozens or even hundreds of applications on XP and may have trouble migrating. Our goal is to support Chrome for XP users during this transition process. Most importantly, Chrome on XP will still be automatically updated with the latest security fixes to protect against malware and phishing attacks.
If you’re an IT administrator and your employees depend on web applications built for older browsers, you can use Legacy Browser Support to set Chrome as the primary browser and limit the usage of the unsupported, legacy browser to only specific web apps. See Chrome for Business to learn more about how to deploy and manage Chrome for an organization.

Not wishing to force any MSE readers to spend money unnecessarily, but if you are considering upgrading from XP (or Vista, or 7) to 8, here's a quick guide :-
1. check whether your computer can take 8
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-assistant-download-online-faq
(for the purposes of this guide please ignore 8.1)
2. The upgrade to 8 is still available (at time of writing) for about £55 from
http://www.box.co.uk/Windows_8_Pro_Upgrade_3UR-00006_from_Any_1268069.html
(also available for the same price from the Box Ebay Store)
You should know that the subsequent (free) upgrade to 8.1 is a bit of a time-waster, to say the least, but 8.0 will be supported for 2 years I believe should you wish to postpone the upgrade to 8.1 to a later date.If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -
It's personal choice really. Some are happy to carry on with beefed up AV, other's think it's too much of a risk and will opt to upgrade.0

Amazon have just hiked their Windows 8 prices up from about £60 to over £100, and I guess the other retailers will follow before too long, so if you can grab one of the links above at £55, do it sooner rather than later.0 -

Your computer becomes more susceptible to a malware infection.0 -

Your PC works as it did before day zero.
Some people will suggest that there are lots of folk out there waiting to release their malware and viruses on day zero + 1, but haven't shown any proof of this.0
