The dealer registered my new car to someone else!

I leased a new car last October, which had been registered first to the dealer (which I wasn't completely clear on when I bought it, my mistake), and then to me. It only had about 5 miles on it when I took delivery.

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that my tax expired, and realised I never received a notice to get a new disc, nor did I receive anything from the dealer about my annual service.

I spoke with the DVLA, who told me that the car was not registered to me, nor was it registered to the dealer.

I contacted the dealer, who did some research and discovered they made a mistake and sent out my paperwork to someone else with the same last name who bought a car around the same time I did. This person returned it to the dealer, and they claim to have sent it to the DVLA to fix things.

They didn't, or it was lost in the post or ... something ... and this other person is still the registered keeper of my car.

My car is parked on private property (so no problem with the DVLA), and the dealer brought me a loaner car, which I've been driving for two weeks.

In telling a few people at work about the whole ordeal, everyone said that this will devalue the car considerably. I will be the third registered keeper on the car. My lease runs another 3 years, but I had been thinking of trading it in, as I'm not really keen on the car - but I wouldn't want another car of the same make.

I'm now quite concerned about the value of the car when it comes time to get rid of it. I know there's a guaranteed value in the lease, but right now, if I were to trade it in, the value would be more (but not if a one year old car has 3 keepers already!).

I'm not sure what my rights are here. Nor am I sure what sort of compensation I should be asking for, and how much.

Thoughts anyone?

Yes, that's what I'm hoping for - but I'm expecting them to just file papers to make the change, not to change the name and eliminate the erroneous purchaser.

Won't this come up as a red flag somewhere, though?

but all the DVLA will do is change the reg. keeper, so the car will still show 3 reg keepers, so still devaluing the car and i suppose as its leased the OP is still paying for the car that they are not using and that LEGALLY is not registered to them.
The OP will be paying a lease company and not the showroom. Call and explain the situation to the lease company and inform them that you want them involved to get the showroom to sort this out with another car that is registered in your name.

nah, if all dvlc did was add another keeper then they would be producing a document that just wasn't true.

It's a mistake and the mistake can be corrected

when you normally lease finance a vehicle then the vehicle is usually registered to the lease company as basically you are hiring the vehicle

It's not a lease, it's a PCP.
