In the v21/biscit days, I'm sure I used my Tiscali email through Geoisp using Outlook express.
I'm assuming you have another email account.
    Move along, nothing to see.

I don't know of any free secure public smtp servers.

for googlemail you can use their own server smtp.gmail.com or smtp.googlemail.com

but for other stuff you will need access to something like

    http://www.authsmtp.com/auth-smtp/service.html

or even better, set up a *cool* email address by registering a domain at 1&1 then use the email address associated with that domain by buying their *Instant Mail* mailboxes option from around 81p per month
That allows you to use their authenticated server which will allow you to send anything.

or if you fancy having a go yourself

    perhaps someone can recommend one?

What I did in those days was to use Biscit for surfing. I retained my other, trusty but pay-by-the-minute ISP, strictly for (outlook express) email. :)

is there no way of sending emails when connected using geoisp other than using a 3rd party smtp server?

Not quite sure what you mean by '3rd party smtp server'.

If you asking whether there is any way to use a pop3 service whilst connected to the net via geoisp, the answer is yes. You could use google's gmail but you have to accept their conditions, which some people find intrusive.

    Is that what you meant?

No, there are no MX records for geoisp so you cannot use them to send mail
    nslookup -querytype=MX geoisp.co.uk
*** No mail exchange (MX) records available for geoisp.co.uk

    http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/lookup.ch?name=geoisp.co.uk&type=MX
    http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/mail.ch?domain=geoisp.co.uk

So if you want to use geoisp to send mail, then you do need 3rd party smtp solutions.
I just logged onto geoisp using my BT line/1899 (still works fine) and sent mail using a couple of authenticated smtp servers, and also tried ports 25 and 587, all worked well, mail received in every case *instantly*.
So it can be done, no ports blocked.

But i think exprog gets the marks for the cheapest, easiest. Use geoisp for general downloading/browsing/receiving mail and just use another isp for sending mail.
    Or back to the webmail...

    Just a thought..
Is it just the one email address that you are using?
Because if it is just one or two, then it can be done by using the gmail/googlemail smtp servers.
Changes need to be made to the gmail and Outlook settings.

Would that be of any use? if so, i can post further details how to set it up.

Any decently configured SMTP server will block the relaying of emails that don't originate from their clients/network. Otherwise, they'll be used by spammers to send out mail and find themselves on blocklists all over the Internet very very quickly.

Your best bet would be to find someone who would host your email (like gmail) and who would also offer authenticated SMTP for sending your email.
