Petrol Loyalty Schemes

Taking into account the slightly higher cost for a diesel car and diesel itself if you do 10,000 miles a year it takes about 3 years to pay for itself, that's not taking into account the fact that the car will be worth more and services are likely to be less frequent. The amount you're spending on petrol I reckon a diesel could pay back for itself in about 18 months.2p off is still 2p off!0

hmm, so it's a choice between a diesel, flintstones-style holes in the bottom of the car, or blockading a fuel refinery until they reduce the tax!
Some say you get better MPG with 'premium' fuels such as optimax... any truth in that?0 -
I've checked it a few times and you do, get much more mileage with Shell that I do with Tesco, monitored it a few times, apparently it is better for your car too.2p off is still 2p off!0

I am in the fortunate position of being able to order Sainburys gift vouchers with a 5% free bonus through youatwork. The minimum order is £300 and I get a bonus of £15 worth of Sainsburys or other vouchers. This is equivalent to a saving of 4p/l. Unlike discount or money off vouchers, Sainsburys gift vouchers CAN be used at their petrol stations and you get Nectar points as well. I guess that this is at least equivalent to any other cashback/loyalty scheme.0

I just posted this on another thread.
But on 5th Gear on channel 5 the other week.
They compared two brand new ford mondeo's. One was a 1.8 petrol and the other a 2L diesel.
They said to break even on the diesel you would need to do 100,000 miles  . Because of the extra cost of buying the diesel car in the first place.

I still haven't seen that programme, but the comparison has to be complete rubbish.
The price differential on those cars is only £895 - less than many manufacturers.
Taking the extra urban MPG as an extremely pro-petrol comparison, the petrol does 50.5 and the diesel 64.2 according to What Car.
So 100,000 miles is 1,980 gallons of petrol or 1,558 gallons of diesel: a difference of 422 gallons.
1,980 gallons of petrol at 84.9p/litre = £7,640.
1,558 gallons of diesel at 89.9p/litre = £6,366.
That's a £1,274 diesel advantage which is almost £400 even after deducting the price differential on the car.
The breakeven point is nowhere near 100,000 miles: it's around 70,000 miles.
Any new car is expected to cover around 100,000 miles over its life. If you personally don't do those 100,000 miles, the benefit of the better fuel economy is nearly always reflected in the higher resale value on the diesel.
What Car suggest 41% of value retained for the diesel and 38% for the petrol, after 3 years/36,000 miles. So, over that time, the £895 higher cost of the diesel car actually converts into a £48 higher depreciation amount as nearly all of the additional cost is recouped. So the breakeven mileage from new is more like a few thousand miles!0 -
Is there really a difference in fuel quality from supermarkets? I thought Tesco put additives in their fuel?
I get the usual clubcard points from Tesco Fuel but are they worth it if you consider the savings from using say Esso fuel?0 -
Hi,
I'm a great supporter of consolidating 'loyalty schemes'. If you've got lots of bits and pieces scattered accross lots of cards you nearly never see the rewards. I'd rather have slightly less now, than wait ten years for a return.
We do have the standard Tesco & Nectar cards, and also a shell card where we consolidate the miles into our BA household account. We also have cashback credit cards to recover straight cash.
Also time really is money in a lot of ways, so combining your petrol top-up with the weekly shop does make sense. You also save petrol on not detouring to fill-up.
We do lots of long distance drives, and I know you should take a flask & sandwiches, but when you're in a rush, or just off a plane you can't. So one of the biggest savings we've found is using the supermarket cafes for their breakfast and lunch specials etc., and also if you need to buy drinks and sandwiches it's a major saving on food as well as petrol compared to the motorway services. I scribble on the map where they are relative to the motorways!
You normally get loyalty points on the food and drink too!!0 -
Isn't Tesco the best for it's loyalty card? or am i missing something?
I have always used them to exchange for Clubcard deals, which as you know, are worth four times the value of the vouchers.I use these to pay for my main summer holiday with French Life.
I recently changed my job, where i can collect points on approx £300 of fuel per week.
Not knowing where i would be able to fill up on route,i applied for the Nectar card and the Shell card just incase.
Luckily, have found that i am able to use my Tesco card as originally planned, but on reading the enclosed leaflets from the others
e.g in 3 months,i would be able to collect 12x300=3600 points from Shell.....1500 points=£10 voucher.....3600 points=approx £25
I would get the same number of points from Tesco, but these would be worth £36.00 X four=£144 off a holiday or other Clubcard deals.
Please correct me if i am wrong.Sponsored by Tesco Clubcard Points !!0
