Get a USB caddy for the old HDD. Take the HDD out of the old machine, put it in caddy, connect to USB port on new machine.
Open folders, copy/paste from USB caddy to new machine0 -
You can get a Sata to USB adapter from eBay for about £8 , pops up as if it's a huge USB pen drive

comes with power unit to power up the sata drive ( theres an adapter power lead for sata) then just plug into your new machine
using one at the moment to retrieve files off a failing sata driveEx forum ambassador
