Want to retrieve old files

hi,

I have a new laptop with windows 8. I want to retrieve the old files from my old hard drive that had windows 7. Is this going to be possible to move the files from my old hard drive onto my new laptop.
I have looked at various Sata cables but none of them mention windows 8. Is this a problem

    You can get a Sata to USB adapter from eBay for about £8 , pops up as if it's a huge USB pen drive :)

    What do I need to search for, will it say it is compatible with windows 8. I read somewhere u need a powered supply.

    Old PC hard drive or laptop? I guess PC if you think you need power.

    Is the old hard drive still in the old machine?

    Well I have 2 in fact, 1 from a pc but the main one I want to get files from is an old laptop. I have removed both as neither of them work.

    Brand names and models?

    Most caddies should be compatible with Windows 8. Example for laptop

    i dont now what is wrong with them, but on most of the descriptions they mention every windows option except windows 8. I emailed one seller on ebay and he said it wouldnt work.

    i can email a few more. i just thought i was missing something

    The pc won't switch on, it cuts out, and the laptop has been dying for about a year crashing, it had a new hard drive as advised by the man at the local computer shop but it didnt solve the problem. It just limped on and finally stopped coming on at all, just a blue screen. At this point I gave up
