Lentils for bulking out food....never again!

Hi all,

I got two kilos of carrots in Aldi for a song.

So, I chopped, blanched and froze half.

The other half I made a carrott, lentil and cumin soup. I just happened to have lentils and decided to chuck them in. I soaked them overnight too as I wasn't able to make soup till next day.

Bear in mind that I have never eaten lentils before now, they were a special offer and I thought it would be a good idea to have them for bulking out, as advised on many occasions here. They were red lentils from M&S.

So, the soup was nice. I gobbled it up.

Next day...OMG I have wind like a hurricane. It is absolutely awful.

I will never use lentils again. Unless someone can tell me lentils don't make you f@rt for your country all day!

  • It is because your body is not used to high fibre foods, you need to introduce them gradually so that your gut can adjust to it.
Be sure to drink plenty of fluid with high fibre foods, preferably water or diluted unsweetened fruit juice.

  • All peas, beans and lentils cause intestinal gas! It doesn't matter how gently you introduce them into your diet because nothing will prevent the fermentation. It's an entirely natural and inevitable process.

I thought everyone knew this? Patently not....

I haven't tried this, but I found the info online. This is apparently how to get rid most of the stuff that causes the gas.

In a stockpot, place 1 pound of beans in 10 or more cups of boiling water. Boil for 2 to 3 minutes. Then cover and set aside overnight. The next day 75 to 90 percent of the indigestible sugars that cause gas will have dissolved into the soaking water.

I looked it up because we had lentil and bean stew and soup the other week, and the effects were somewhat long lasting.
Not heavily in debt, but still trying to sort things out.

I love all vegetables and pulses but I suffer from IBS and have to limit the amount I eat. I find this really annoying but the only way is in moderation unless you have the constitution of an ox.

But I did soak them overnight!

Another poster has said maybe I'm not used to fibre. Well I eat my five a day most days, never eat refined carbs, always wholemeal.

But honestly the gas from lentils really surprised me, and I'm still emitting....out in the garden at the moment, and it's bloody cold!

It's just not worth it for me.

Have never had this before, and can eat anything.

Thanks for replies all. Lentils off the menu for me forever.

If you add some asafoetida (in the spice aisle) to the dish during cooking then it will reduce the windy effect without altering the flavour - pretty much all Indian recipes with lentils in also have asafoetida in too. It stinks like a beggar in its raw form but don't be put off, it really does help.
