Lost item but buyer didn't pay for insurance

    I've never understood sellers who ask for £1 as insurance cover, what service is this that comes with an extra £1??

    I'm assuming its recorded delivery that they are thinking of providing, but then again, recorded items are only covered for the same amount as standard items, £34

    these sellers need their heads knocked together

    Maybe those sellers are smarter than we think - its a handy extra £1 profit if the buyer ticks the box....

    The buyers who opt not to pay the extra pound will be smarter as not only will they save themsleve a pound but if the item does not arrive they can file a dispute.

    Adding extra fees like £1.00 for insurance is like adding VAT. Rather than give the buyer the option just add the pound to the auction to begin with.

    Yes, i was merely commenting on the previous comment that sellers who give people the option to pay for insurance are perhaps a bit dim.

    OBVIOUSLY no one in their right mind is going to tick the box, but i'd say a fair few do.

    I send my items up to £34 standard mail, yet I do get people on occasions ask me if they can pay an extra 70p 'so they are covered'. if they really want it recorded then I'll do that for them, but I usually explain that they have no need to pay extra as it was my responsibility to get it to them anyway. Personally I dislike recorded, I seem to have a greater loss using that than I do with standard post.

    cafenervosa, my last couple of claims were paid out a bit slow but my buyers (well one buyer one family member) were never contacted by the Royal Mail. I do think RM claims depends on who happens to be on duty that time, sometiimes i've even had my full postage returned, and once, much earlier this year I got compensated twice, once is stamps and then the next day by cheque?

    I have a likely claim coming up..buyer says item not received and when I checked his confirmed address it is a university. I've always struggled with claims based on a uni address, especially out of term time so I don't feel it is going to end well.

    I know I am bringing an old(ish) thread back to life but this was just what I was searching for. I wanted to know if, as a buyer, I should pay for extra insurance:confused: . As I read it I don't need to:D , as has been said, its just giving the seller more money, something that I have always done until now:mad:

    Totally agree

    To the OP, if insurance is only an extra £1, you should really absorb this into your start price or P&P charge as the vast majority of buyers (ie those that pay with Paypal) will get their full refund no matter what you may think about it.

    I think the vast majority of buyers and to be honest perhaps sellers don't actually realise that the responsibilty is with teh seller. I've seen this old..
    "add a pound or two for insurance"
    or
    "I won't be responsible if item is lost otherwise" stuff all the time on listings.

    Makes me want to message them and say..

    YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE, YOU BORN MUPPET :)
    I started off with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

    I've gone all dewy eyed at the idea that my profit margins are such that I can build an extra pound into my start price to pay for recorded delivery...oh they were the days!

    I will not pay an additional 70p to Royal mail that serves no purpose at all. All my items below £34 go standard mail and if buyer claims non receipt I refund them and reclaim from the RM after 15 working days. Sending an average of 100 parcels a month and paying £70 for the privelege of getting a signature does not make economic sense on my sales.
