Lost item but buyer didn't pay for insurance

It may have cost £120 when new but it was only worth £65 as that is what someone was prepared to pay for it.I recently sold a car CD-changer on Ebay....The item finished at £65.....The CD player was worth £120..
It might make you feel marginally better to know you have lost something worth £65 rather than £120.

If the buyer didn't pay for insurance, then that is their choice, but it is still the responsibility of the Op to prove delivery - if you can not prove it, then paypal will simply refund the buyer with no questions.
You will end up bearing the cost of the refund, regardless of whether the buyer paid for insurance or not.
It's an unfortunate and expensive learning curve...<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -
When I buy an item and the seller adds aditional charges to the item in order for insurance I never take out these options.
If I don't get the item I will file a paypal dispute. As a seller, everything I sell is insured either by recorded delivery or special delivery.
When I used to send things unisured I nearly always got buyers claiming they never received. Not worth the hassle, it's your word against their word against the royal mail's word.0 -
Recorded delivery does not actually include extra insurance, and is no real help if an item is genuinely lost in the post: its value is that if the item has been delivered, the buyer can't claim otherwise because they (or someone else at their address) will be required to sign for it (or should be). A missing Recorded item is still only insured for the usual £34.
Royal Mail only consider items officially lost after 15 working days (normally 3 weeks), so if you talk to your customer nicely they should be willing to wait till then just in case it turns up. If it doesn't, you should refund in full.0 -
I've never understood sellers who ask for £1 as insurance cover, what service is this that comes with an extra £1??
I'm assuming its recorded delivery that they are thinking of providing, but then again, recorded items are only covered for the same amount as standard items, £34
these sellers need their heads knocked together0 -

No, by sending the item by standard parcels an extra £1 would cover up to £100 compensation.

Thank you to those people who posted helpful comments.
Looks like I will have to learn from this and pay back the seller the full amount.0 -

That's only for RM standard parcels, what about those sellers who offer a £2 Royal Mail 1st Class option and then optional 'insurance' at £1 extra? they are the one's I had in mind.0 -
just refund £34
you wernt exactly askin much for the additional insurence0 -
Have any of you tried to get a refund of £34 from Royal Mail recently? Well I can tell you its a hard enough job getting the minimum insurance refunded even with all the proof of posting documents. I'm finding that RM are saying they are sending out a letter to the lost address and unless the person who claimed the item was not received responds to the letter from Royal Mail then RM assume that the item has been delivered. I've had 4 or 5 claims in the last 6 months from lost UK packages and none have yet been refunded.
Getting back to the main issue at hand and that the buyer needs to be refunded the full money regardless of if the seller will lose the money or not.0
