  • It is interesting to read what people do there shopping. I am tying hard to save money, I live by myself so no help with money coming in. I get my shopping in Tesco, cos its near where I work, but if it will save me money I might go to aldi, which is near my house.
I will get my shopping and see how much cheaper it is.

Thanks for clarifying, I guessed as much. I think for some it's become an incredibly silly habit. Do people really say I'm going to Sainsbobs or Mr A in RL? Perhaps it's a habit picked up from 'mom'.:rotfl:

I understand why it's done now, but I have to admit, sometimes I can't work out what the coded references mean!:rotfl:

I buy my meat from local farm shop once a month, fruit and veg box and eggs, milk, butter and bread are delivered every week. I also do a Mr T "Big Shop" online at the beginning of each month for tins, jars, cat food, non-perishables etc (basically all the heavy stuff I can't be bothered to pack and lug home myself!). Oh and I also bulk buy my washing powder once every 6-8 months - it's cheaper and again, I don't have to carry it home. I detest food shopping and doing it this way limits how many times I have to set foot in a supermarket or any other kind of food shop!
  • Difficult to answer this one really as we shop all over too.

The bulk of our shopping ATM is from Aldi (tuna, cheese, veg, fruit, flour, eggs, coffee, peas, oven chips, cling film, vitamins, ear buds, wine etc) but I go to Waitrose regularly too because they do brilliant reductions often on organic things. We go to ASDA once a month ish for soft drinks or booze of a different type out frozen veggie things.

We occasionally go to the co-op for another yellow sticker hunt. Sometimes we go to Morrison's ( infact we used to do all of our shopping there until we went to Aldi one week to see what we could save.. And never looked back) only if there is an offer that we need.

We occasionally go to Sainsbury's for a deal or their lovely instant mash potato (it is by far the best) but it is so horrendously expensive for anything else imo. More occasional still is a trip to tesco as they are ridiculously priced too and I just don't like the experience of being there somehow..

I have been in lidl a few times it seems OK but there isn't one local to us unfortunately .

Also use wilko, HB and super drug for other bits and use the local green grocers.

Phew.. Sounds like we do nothing other than shop :o but it isn't like that we just pop in when passing our on a trip out our something.

We got to Aldi once a fortnight and buy almost all of our shopping.
We have an allotment so we don't buy veggies.

Every week I do my Mums shopping where I go to either Tesco or Sainsburys. There I buy apples, cherry tomatoes and yoghurts. Plus anything else which is needed. I do not rate Aldi fruit or veg I'm afraid as it simply doesn't last.

I buy basic yoghurts from Sainsburys/Tesco's. We are lucky enough to have our own fruit which we add to basic yoghurt. Aldi don't sell basic yoghurt only high end. If I bought high end then I would get them from Aldi as they are easily as good as the branded versions and certainly cheaper.

    I've ALWAYS wondered about that.

All over the OS boards, people make coded references to brand names and supermarkets.

Is there some sort of etiquette that prevents us from saying Sainsburys, Morrisons, and Marks and Spencers?

Please could someone in the know let us know what is taboo about brand names?

    Thanks!

It's because if you put in the proper name, it shows up on search engines, and so is effectively free publicity. If you substitute a letter, it is far less likely to show up.

By all means, use the proper name if you really like the company and want to give them free advertising, but many of us on here feel that the big supermarkets are a necessary evil in today's life, to be avoided whenever possible! I'd certainly rather support a local butcher, baker etc if there is one in the area which sells decent produce, but often find there isn't so end up using one of the biggies.

Edit: Cross posted - I see there are other reasons too.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
  • I go to Aldi for most of my shopping these days, though most of my meat I try to get from a local farm shop ( really good quality and supporting local businesses ). Whatever I can't get in Aldi I'll pop to Tescos for as its on my way home from Aldi.

  • For me the less often I go in a supermarket the less I spend. Probably because I am not very disciplined when it comes to buying food! I meal plan and shop once a fortnight and last year I converted to Aldi. Aldi, Tesco, Asda and the likes are all about a 50 mile round trip but its worth it, especially if I fill up with petrol while I am there.

I do like the idea of supporting my local shops but they are expensive and while the quality might be better I cant afford to be choosy at the moment.

I use mozza's (that is what i call it in RL) If i start my shop and find that they have swapped the shelfs around so i cant find anything i leave and go to teckso's (again this is what i call it in RL lol weird i know)

My OH is very picky and will not eat anything from a aldi or lidl which annoys the life out of me because i live over the road from a lidl so it would save me at least an hours jouney and lots of money!
