Help in wiring speakers...

Could someone advise me please how to attach external speakers to my tv please.

Samsung PS BN64-01027A

On the rear of the tv there are phone sockets - 2 channels audio output of 10 watts per channel via 2 phono sockets.

Speakers: Gale Satellite 10

I used phono leads from the phono sockets on the tv to the speakers, then

I went into the sound set up and chose external speakers as appose to the internal ones it said 'not available'

Could someone assist this old pensioner how to set this system up please.

regards
Robert

  • I think you need powered speakers or a Home Cinema system since the instructions say that the internal amplifier is turned off when selecting external sound.

My Samsung only works with powered speakers.

Yes I think that you are correct. The supplier that I bought them from was under the impression that it was just a case of connecting from the phono sockets to speakers as the output was 10w per channel, but when the external speakers are switched off it also switches off the internal amplifier.

So it would seem that powered system is required.

It's only 10 Watts per channel to the TV's own speakers, so even if you could just connect up your own speakers there would barely be enough to drive them.
I've seen plenty of set ups where people have connected speakers for which the TV is underpowered to provide for, the owners then wonder why they have to pump the volume right up to hear anything significant.
Connect a separate amplifier or get a soundbar all-in-one for the best results.

You've already bought yourself a nice set of stereo speakers. As has been said, that 10W power is going to the TV's own speakers. Phono leads aren't amplified and the shop assistant should have known that.
A nice stereo amp would be a good solution here, if you can get one with a remote control, or any old second hand AV amp, which you could send to simply stereo. Second hand ones can be had for well under £100. Maybe you've already got some speaker cable you can re-use to the speakers?

    Just another tip:
Phono (RCA) plugs are designed for thin coaxial cable carrying low level signals. It's not possible to connect twin speaker cable of any decent size so that in itself should be a clue that they aren't "speaker" sockets.

The audio outputs (numbered 5 in the manual) are definitely line-level outputs, so you either need active speakers with built-in volume controls, or a stereo amplifier with separate speakers.

Any HiFi retailer should be able to provide something functional.
