These threats arrive as a zip file where you have to unzip and run the executable. Don't do that and you're fine.

Other email threats may include a link to an exploit site. Keep the system and third party programs updated and don't click the link and you'll be fine.

View emails as plain text rather than html.

I have had a few of thes HTML bank Fraud trojans the past few weeks come into my email and immediately dealt with by my Avast free antivirus software. This is worrying as I have online bank accounts with Halifax, Santander and Natwest. They seem to push using Rapport software but I always decline because I tried it once and it was pain in the backside. I heard on the radio today a woman saying she lost 20K because of this malicious software running in the background of her PC. She didn't open the email, just highlighted it which was enough to set it off. My Avast software blocked it before it got in my email inbox so what I would like to know is:

How can I check this is safe without logging into my account ?

Is Rapport my only option ?

    I am very concerned.

It was on You & Yours.

I've heard of drive-by malware but I thought most came from opening a joke/poem/video link in an email, even from a friend or family, as they could have been a host or just passed it on.

You could go on but it wouldn't do any good because apple are a locked entity. Pc is a different engine which is vunareable. I have never heard of anyone getting a virus or mailware on the ipad.:rotfl:

Malware could get onto the ipad through bad apps Apple check apps work with their platform but do you really think they can check them all for malware or bad intentions. Last year around 600,000 macs were infected by the Flashback Trojan and Apple took three months to fix the exploit, also look for the hacking of tech journalist Matt Honin http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/08/apple-amazon-mat-honan-hacking/

All PCs can be hacked or infected whatever OS their running whether their running Windows, Apple or Linux.

I think its so funny that people STILL say Apple products are safe.

They never get infected. (so wrong)

Like asking someone who doesnt use an antivirus if they have ever been infected.
If you dont have something to check how do you know?

I used to work for a printers. They all used Mac's back then. If any work had to go out for plates to be made etc they were destroyed on return.
No account could they be used on the machines again.

This was after they had a floppy returned infected and lost a load of data.

the 20k was a business user (arguably it shouldn't matter), a retail customer would be covered by the banks fraud guarantee, provided they hadn't been reckless with passwords

Ok, I give in but I honestly didn't think an ipad would be at risk.

What concerns me is how did they get my email address ? I have two G mail accounts and one o2 broadband email. As Avast has put them in the vault before I can see them I have no way of telling which account they have been sent to. If I knew I could go the that account's spam settings and ask it to filter before they get to my PC. I also think it's a bit unnerving to think they are sitting in a vault on my PC.

Could be someone who has your email address in their contacts that has been compromised , and I just don't mean "friends" , eg adobe was in the news this month amongst endless others. I prefer to never keep my contacts on-line just on my various machines at home.

I had my gmail email hacked a couple of years ago and had to abandon it and get a new one. It was a pain as i had to inform all my online accounts it had changed.
