Blimey yet another who thinks it's big and clever to spell check and correct someone else's grammer....
I just thought your email was rather anal and lengthy, you may of actually recieved a response if it had been shorter, sweeter and straight to the point.
To be fair, the OP is trying to demonstrate an area of his expertise (proof-reading) which was mentioned as something in his self-employment repertoire.0 -
According to the HMRC website...
Artists, writers and craftsmen
Creative activities are notoriously time consuming, and the amount of work accomplished each day can seem disproportionately small for the amount of effort spent. Likewise, the amount of money received for the products may seem to represent a very poor return for the labour. In cases of this kind the issue is not likely to be the number of hours worked, but whether the activities qualify as remunerative work.
btw... it's shameful that no one proof read that article !

So hardly NMW
£25 for 40 hours work. That's going to pay the bills and if I were Tax Credits I would be sceptical too.0 -

Agreed, it will indeed be very difficult to convince HMRC that...I have enough work in front of me to fill a 40-hour week for several months, though my main client can only afford to pay me £25 a week to do it, which is likely to take her at least 6 months to pay off.
is gainful self employment.

Thanks IQ for the tip, I'll look into that. I got a response from the complaints department but that was over 3 weeks ago, and I don't hold out much hope.
The email was anal and lengthy, I admit; but it was responded to, in a matter of hours, by the office of my MP. His caseworker emailed straight back, asking for my NI number so he could try to help.
It's only £25 a week because she can't afford to pay me the £800+ in total it will cost her in one go, and I might have had more trade by now if I could afford to put more cards out.
The initial request for information was a spot-check by their compliance department from someone asking for evidence of business for the three months before the first day of operation.
It's obvious some people here have posted from a default position of mistrust; enjoy that. But I am running a business, and with or without fair treatment from HMRC, I will continue to.
Thanks to those who made the effort to try and understand. x0
