Sharepoint

Hi All,

Our company is talking about bringing in this application (it was on a monthly report), what exactly does the application do?

I did an online check and it seems to provide a platform to build Intranets, is this a correct understanding? It seems a bit pointless as we already have an Intranet setup.

Thanks

Yep it does but it's a lot more sophisticated but i can't think what else it does.. although it allows users to upload documents rather than it just being an internal internet.
  • Upload documents - in what context?

The 'sharing' aspect of sharepoint. Documents and policies, obviously not just anything you want to upload. But with the usual intranets there'll be an administrator who does all the changes but with sharepoint you can assign different admin tasks. People with the correct admin levels can upload policy documents, procedures etc without having to send to the intranet administrators to do for them

    I'm explaining it badly though

You can also use it for bits like auto archiving emails for group access, shared calendars (say room or vehicle bookings), keeping track of projects with defined stages (think product launches) and so on.
  • You can do very clever, complicated things with Sharepoint - it's all in the configuration and accelerators

I feel for you in that case ... ^_~ lol
I only ever tried to use sharepoint when it first came out and was "all the rage" for Microsoft Certified Consultants who were pushing it to every company they could see...

I was the guy that came in when the consultants were paid and dissipated (yup they evaporated like mist once they got paid!) and had to keep sharepoint (and usually the CRM server!) up and running and try to make it do all the things the company was promised it could do. In the end most companies fell back to a basic SBS and Sage's CRM (to link in to their current account system.)

    ah! the good old days....
    I never miss them... lol

Sharepoint is powerful and could probably be an excellent solution, if it was ever implemented and managed properly.

...I've yet to work for a client who has achieved that!
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

They use Sharepoint where I work but, to me, it's just yet another place where files/information be stored. So now I have to check not just the network drives and our company intranet, but also this 'wonderful' sharepoint ...

They've also just sanctioned the use of Yammer, someone has decided that we should hold informal but work related discussions on there.

I'm amazed I actually find time to do my job ;)

Sharepoint in itself provides a platform and foundation for sharing stuff and creating portals. When well implemented it means well-structured access so people can see what's relevant, write where they have a need to and not where they don't, set up forums, bug lists, workflows and processes. Badly implemented it is a pretty dull looking intranet.

Make sure whoever puts it in doesn't just do the installation but actually understands best practice and can bring that with them to advise on the setup

We've got Yammer here. Pretty much everybody in my office signed up and then cancelled their accounts after a week of getting uttter shoite from it.
