Bonfires

My garden looks a lot like a smaller version on the amazon rainforest at the moment, so tonight I'm going to start tackling it, and on Saturday would like to have a bonfire with all the waste.

I know nothing about bonfire etiquette or even how to build one safely and sensibly.

Has anyone got any tips?

Please don't build one over several days at this time of year. Hedgehogs are looking for places to call home for winter!

Check your council rules for burning times, look at weather conditions and wind direction to check it will not cause inconvenience and then gather burning immediately feeding as you go, so no one makes a home and gets toasted in your pile in a few days time.

hummm, I need to clear the vegetation tonight as my landlady might pop over in the next few days.. is there any way to avoid creatures setting up home?

also it says on my council's website is that it's not illegal to have a bonfire but call them if it's a nuisance.

Make a pile, then start the fire not in that pile but with another one, feeding from the top of first pile into new pile. That's the ways we usually do it. That way anything cowering on first pile is not hurt.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November, Gunpowder Treason and Plot

Also a good time to have a bonfire, but keep an eye out for Hedgehogs.

Id wait until around the 5th November - weekend close to it if better and burn using a brazier basket.

Tempt your hedgehogs out with some Chicken flavoured(not fish) Dog Food. NEVER MILK.
My Mind wanders, if found please return.
  • Put a message out on Freegle but say collection is urgent - at this time of year hopefully you might get either people wanting supplies for bonfire or lounge fires

The reason for doing it this weekend is it's our village's bonfire and firework party and we want to watch their fireworks from the comfort of our own garden.

We have no access to our garden but through our house -I'm not keen on the idea of people traipsing through our house. especially as we've got a housebound kitten who's desperate for a taste of the outside world!
