Actually, bizarrely enough, that's probably not true! Wallpaper in Victorian times was often made with arsenic dyes and when that becomes old and starts to flake it did poison people. Not aware of any official statistics, but you just have to see how much arsenic could be in a roll of that stuff to guess it did at least a few people in
