Have resurrected this thread simply because I now need a new external door.
The glass has moved in my 7 year old UPC door and as its a sealed unit it can't just be shoved back into place without breaking it open.
So again all my paltry savings will go on a new door and as the other door was put in at same time, I imagine I will need another new door real soon.
This has put the bathroom refurb back another year or several.
No wonder I am greying more every day.
Yes the doors came with 10 yr guarantee but the company that installed them is no longer in business.
I hate my bathroom so much, and it was the last item on the list of things to do.

We bought a money pit 7 yrs ago.......had alot of the renovations done including a disabled extension which we got a council grant for.........but since hubby became ill he cant do alot of DIY and I am useless and hate painting, but also work fulltime to help pay for said money pit
In previous house we have took out loans and credit cards to pay for the work as I wanted it all to be nice to keep up with the Joneses really, am still paying off these:mad: so I vowed that this time round we wouldnt be doing that so now my way of thinking is things will get done when they get done and if visitors want to turn there noses up then they wont be invited round again
I am just happy to have my own place to be honest

Does your door have an obvious inside panel? So is the door made up of an outer frame which surrounds an inner panel? If so and it is the inner panel that is broken you may be able to just replace the inner panel .0 -

No problem about the questions especially if it can save you money.
We have just had the inner panel replaced on our door as it had a crack in it We were really lucky as they still make the same style.
We found a big local door company. The company came and measured the door including the thickness of the panel. They then took a few weeks to make us a new inner panel and it took about 30 mins to fit.
The cost was £345, but it may be cheaper for you as we have 'fancy' glass in the door. Our door is very wide and so we have a side pane of glass alongside the door. They only make these with coloured panes of glass in, but for a simple style door it may be cheaper. This cost included door knocker and letterbox.

When I commented to a upvc-ing firm about disliking the glass in the front and back doors here they instantly offered to replace the glass for me with one of my choice (at a cost of course) and they aren't the firm that did the doors originally.
So its obviously possible just to replace one "bit" of a upvc door if wanted.0 -

Out in the sticks where we live currently it seems quite normal to take forever to put in a bill for payment........for example, our heating engineer has done loads of work for us - including re-siting our oil-fired boiler in a different part of the house after we had an extension built last year - and he only ever gives a verbal *quote* beforehand, then takes literally months to submit his bill

We always have more than enough cash ready just in case, but he's soooooo laid back he just shrugs his shoulders and says 'wait till I put my bill in'
TBH, it's rather frustrating as I would rather pay ASAP, but it seems that's just how things are out here.......we've even tried chasing him up for the bill, but to no avail. He's not alone in this either - at least he turns up (eventually
) though, unlike many we've encountered.
Otoh, our sparky (who's not from round these 'ere rural parts), submits a printed quote (by post and email), hands us a bill when the work is completed and expects payment within a week, assuming we haven't paid him on the day.....which we usually do, but occasionally we've added additional work along the way so don't know exactly how much extra it will cost.....Mortgage-free for fourteen years!

Would it make a difference Phoebe if you asked for these verbal quotes to be "doubled up" and also sent to you by email?
Mind you, having said that, one of the workmen I have been employing here only does verbal quotes as well, but at least I've discovered that he sticks to the price he said and its then just a case of handing him the money immediately he has finished and not even bothering to wait for a bill to come in.
I've discovered its rare to get sent a quote or bill by post these days (guess that's down to stamps now being 50p each).0 -
Possibly, Money, but tbh I think he's such an old-fashioned guy that he'd struggle with the modern technology

His bills never increase from the quote stage - unless we ask him to add stuff of course - in fact they've been known to decrease, lol :rotfl:Mortgage-free for fourteen years!
