Buying a car without log book/v5

If the car isn't taxed and they don't have the log book I'd walk away unless they have the green slip or letter from the DVLA to say the tax is due (which is unlikely).
When you apply for the logbook / V5c they have to contact the last owner to make sure it's ok to transfer the car etc. This can take about 6 weeks, so you'll be left with a car you can't drive. This depends on exactly what they mean.
If they're saying they don't have the log book OR the V5 this implies that by the log book they mean the service history of the car, without this you just don't know how it's been looked after and serviced in the past.
The confusion though is that a lot of people use logbook interchangeably with V5 when referring to the vehicle's registration document, so it may be that all that's missing is the V5 and the car's service history log is available.
The logbook and the V5 is the log book. https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration-certificate-v5c-log-book
the service history is neither the V5 or the log book, it's the service history.0 -
Very good advice above !
No VC5 and you are taking a huge risk and trying to get your money back from a LTD car dealer is like trying to plat fog, the police will say it's a civil dispute.
IMO If a dealer has failed to obtain a VC5 there is a reason, perhaps they fear the checks will reveal secured finance or one of these dreaded log book loans.
If it has one, you lose the car and your money.
NO VC5 = WALK AWAY.Be happy...;)0 -
As already said don't buy it.
When i went to the local DVLA office to sort out my daughters licence there were people in the queue want to tax cars they had bought with no V5C.
A guy was asking what people wanted to help speed up the queue and he told them they cannot tax it today.
They have to apply for the V5C and wait for it to turn up.
He was quite blunt with them when they said what can they do. "DON'T BUY A CAR WITHOUT THE LOGBOOK".
Also mentioned if they gave the old logbook to a loan company as security then sold it without the book. If he doesnt pay they will take the car.
And those types of loan do not always appear in the HPI.
Only buy it if your willing to lose the car and money. Otherwise wait for them to get a replacement V5C.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

I've just seen an ad for a car with no V5 and it is surprisingly cheap, now am I being stupid? But if the 'owner' has taken out a log book loan, surrenders the V5, then gets a new V5 from the DVLA on the basis they lost the original, do they have.....the car, a V5, the cash from a log book loan that won't show up on HPI, and then potentially a wad of cash from me too??! Or would HPI indemnify me against that because it bought with a V5?0
