Buying a car without log book/v5

Not sure if i'm posting in the right section or not, so please feel free to tell me if i should post this elsewhere.
i'm looking at buying a car, but the garage have said the previous owners lost the log book/v5... (i have no idea what either is, as this is my first car) & that the car cannot be taxed without filling in a V62 which costs £25 (they're paying it)
Without the log book, i have no proof that i'm the owner of the car do i?
And what does the V5 do?
Is there anyway they can tax it on my behalf?
thanks

You don't need the v5 to get insurance (if that's what you are asking).
And you will need your insurance in place before the car can be taxed.0 -

This depends on exactly what they mean.
If they're saying they don't have the log book OR the V5 this implies that by the log book they mean the service history of the car, without this you just don't know how it's been looked after and serviced in the past.
The confusion though is that a lot of people use logbook interchangeably with V5 when referring to the vehicle's registration document, so it may be that all that's missing is the V5 and the car's service history log is available.
If the V5 is missing then all that's needed is the V62 (this is the form needed to be filled in to replace a V5) so if the garage are going to be paying for a V62 and submitting this with your details then you're fine, as this will make you the registered keeper and the DVLA will send you a V5.0 -
Was hoping to have the car paid for, taxed and insured by next friday!!!!!
This is not a problem. Just make sure the garage complete and sign the V62 dated as the date you bought the car (if you're a new keeper the form asks for the date you took ownership of the car) and that they give this to you.
You can then declare yourself as the registered keeper as of the date on the form to insurance companies to get your insurance sorted, once you have this take the V62 and insurance certificate/cover note to a post office and they'll be able to tax the car for you (this is where they'll also charge you the £25 fee for the V62 as they'll take and get this processed as well, so make sure the garage give you the fee and the form when you buy the car).0 -

On the v5 Registration Document ("log book") it states in large bold letters at the top, that the keeper is not necessarily the legal owner. The V5 shows the keeper, which is simply the person responsible for taxing the car, and who the police can contact regarding traffic offences etc.
Having your name on a V5 does not prove you own a car, but if someone was trying to sell a car without one (or with a V5 in someone else's name), they would need a pretty good reason before I parted with any cash.what do you mean....?
If the previous owner has taken a "log book loan", http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logbook_loan they have actually sold the vehicle to the loan company. It no longer belongs to them (even if they are still the registered keeper on the V5), so if you think you're buying it, you're not. The real legal owner can recover it from you leaving you with nothing. You would have to try to get your money back from the garage (who "sold" it to you without having legal title to it)We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
The earth needs us for nothing.
The earth does not belong to us.

The cars service history IS available.
I'm guessing he just means the V5. he did mention filling in a V62, and that costing £25
Okay thanks. this has really helped a lot.
thank you0
