Internet tv questions

Options
Hiya

I've got Sky at the minute (can't stand 'em!) and use an internet TV - it's currently attached of course to the Sky box and the broadband router; I use a dongle thingy in the side to pick up the signal wirelessly.

Now, I would like to be able to cut loose from cable or Sky if I could. But, I would still want to be able to do the following and I just don't know if I can or not. Are there ways of streaming via satelllite or any other fandangled ways that I just haven't thought about?:

how would I watch UK tv series like Eastenders?
how would I watch channels like Nickeloldeon or Disney (not for me you understand, honest)

All these services seem geared to watching films but leave out 'regular tv' and I wouldn't want to lose the ability to watch it. i think I just need to get my head round sitting in front of the TV but not watching regular channels iykwim. I do watch iPlayer through the internet tv and I had lovefilm but the films were SOOOO old and they never seem to get new stock but that's about as much as I've utilised the internet tv feature.

I don't mind paying a premium price for a one-off latest movie, or a quid or two for an older movie that's been out for a while but am sick of shelling out nearly £60 a month to have a subscription to 100s of channels that I never even watch. I just can't afford it but still want to see my normal tv and dear daughter to be able to view all her teen stuff.

You can watch eastenders on iplayer or catchupTV, both are over the interweb and require nothing more than broadband.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

    Got an aerial?
    Then get a YouView Box.

Freeview PVR with catchup and the ability to connect to services like Now TV.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • An aerial I don't have actually! That's the one thing that's never been there (or if it is, it's not connected up properly as it's never been able to get any kind of TV signal). I do have the sky dish of course - but if something needs an actual standard aerial to work, it's not going to work for me unfortunately.

I'll have a look at YouView though, thanks.

OK, in which case have a look at Freesat (not freesat from sky). Freesat from Sky is what you get if you cstop your Sky sub.

Freesat won't give the OP Nickelodeon or Disney, of course.

There are plenty of FTA kids' channels on the 'Sky' platform - pull the card out and flick through from 600 up.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

So excluding Nickelodeon and Disney, a Humax <freetime> box would do the job. It's the Freesat equivalent of YouView - that is, an HD recorder, with catch up services that are integrated into the TV guide - ie you simply go backwards on the TV guide to find the programme you want to watch and watch it through the internet (if it's available of course).
Consider DVD boxsets for some kids programmes maybe?

I'll have a look at that, thank you.
