Book East Coast advance tickets 12 weeks before travel to Kings Cross. No need for any tube travel, there are trains every 15 minutes on First Capital Connect from Kings Cross/St Pancras direct to Gatwick Airport. If you want to stay overnight, there are plenty of Premier Inns and Travelodges close to Kings Cross.

My warning is in respect of booking your return train, advance tickets are great value but they are only valid on the actual train booked. Please allow a lot of time for possible delays on your return journey. I presume you booked the very cheap Norwegian flights that went on sale this week? If you did, there are many people in the industry worried about the timetables, it appears a single Dreamliner is meant to operate 7 return transatlantic flights a week with the shortest turnaround times in the US of only 90 minutes. Three times a week it is supposed to be flying to JFK where delays of 60 minutes just to get to the runway are regular. Their short haul flights from Gatwick have been widely praised but their long haul flights operating from Scandanavia have been a disaster with long, long delays and cancellations. Make sure your return rail ticket is flexible!

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of booking a travelodge near Gatwick at the end of the return flight before travelling back home to counteract both the tiredness and any delays. Have also seen that easy jet have taken the route but their flight times aren't really conducive to the Lax flight times.

Then a night at Gatwick is by far your best idea. I noticed from the timetables that Norwegian's plane flies to New York the day before the Los Angeles flights so delay is a real possibility but hopefully all the Dreamliner problems will have been sorted out by then. If not, Norwegian will hire in alternative aircraft to make sure you get there.
If this is your first time to Los Angeles, enjoy it, I first flew there 30 years ago and I still remember the excitement of looking out of the window seeing all the houses with swimming pools and thinking 'wow'. Now as old age creeps on it takes more to excite me but landing in San Diego down the coast still does it. Roll on retirement!
