The first two replies were daft, this was the first one that made sense:
You can use the "Ask seller a question" link and just ask them outright. Sometimes they'll tell you.

Oh and by the way you're not allowed to retract a bid just to find out the reserve.

Like fay says please be careful in trying to get too clever with ebay regulations. All bid retractions show as a number on your feedback page and many sellers do check that if they are selling high priced goods as they prefer not to deal with buyers who bid by accident.

Also surely all this is nonsense either. If you put in your maximum bid and you don't reach the reserve then it doesn't matter as you bid the most you were prepared to pay anyway, so it doesn't matter what the reserve is. If your maximum is above the reserve then you will then only be competing with other buyers once reserve has been met, so no difference to any other auction.

  • Some sellers don't like to state how much their reserve is, as if they say, sometimes that is all the item will fetch, and they are hoping for more and the reserve is the minimum they are hoping it will fetch.
It surprises me though that not many people know that here in the UK we have a minimum that can be a reserve and that is £50. so when ever you see reserve (UK) it will definately be £50 or higher.
I am sure in the States they can put any reserve on, which is how it should be here. There should be no limits as to what reserve you are allowed to put on an item. I have sold many items that I want say for eg £30 minimum but because i can only put a reserve of £50 on it, I have felt forced to put the starting price at £30, instead of trying to get a bidding war going at a starting price of 99p ......if that made any sence lol

The question was: "is there any way to find out the reserve of an item?", therefore my reply makes perfect sense. Which part are you struggling to make sense of?

I recently bought my son a car. It was one of three ending through the course of Sunday, all very similar condition, milage and age. By revealing the reserve, I opted for the one with the reserve set at £4,000, thus avoiding the other 2 with reserves of £4,400 and £4,500 respectively and so saving at least £400.

The part where you advise OP to jeopardise their ebay account by breaking ebay rules.

Why do some people stick an item on ebay for 99p then reserve it at £100. They even mention it has a reserve for £100. Is this fee avoidance?

    Nope, perfectly legit.

They have to pay to put the reserve on, so there's no fee avoidance.

    Reserves aren't state secrets.
