Options
Can somebody help me with a NowTV Box I bought from Argos as they wont refund my money...See below. They both just keep saying that I need a credit card but on there websites it only says cards, that's why I bought the item as I thought my debit card would be ok..

what can I do now as I would like my money back.
thanks

My email to Argos
Before I decided to buy the Now TV Box I looked at the Now TV webpage + yours for what I needed to join, I also checked out Terms and Conditions and finally the Legal bit at the bottom of the webpages. In fact I checked most of your websites.
>
> I then went and bought the Now TV Box + 3months Sky Movies from your Elgin, Moray. UK store... The collection lady in the store said there was no 30day refund which I found very odd but seeing as I had already paid for the item I had no choice to say no....
>
> I eagerly took it home a went to set it up and was SHOCKED to find that Sky Now TV only accept a Credit Card.. I only have a Clydesdale Bank (Mastro) Debit Card.
>
> Now I am out of pocket to the tune of £25 and no way of getting this box working or to see the Sky Movies as promised.
>
> To say I am very upset with BOTH Argos & Sky Now TV is an understatement as there was NO MENTION OF THIS on any of the websites...
>
> I cannot borrow a card as I don't have any relations...
>
> all I want is this box working like it said it would.

They do accept debit cards, just not Maestro cards.

I found it fairly easily by searching the help section for "payment" (the only place I saw it after a quick glance through the site. That probably doesn't help your case however.

Trouble with shops like Argos is that they have a blanket policy & trying to get something resolved via email is doomed to fail.

Perhaps if you contacted somebody at Consumer Rights or similar they could advise you?

The only thing I can suggest is perhaps just saying that the item isn't working as then I believe you would be entitled to a refund. You wouldn't actually be lying as the box isn't working for you with your chosen card. :o)

    Good luck anyway.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Distance selling regulations means you normally have 14 days to return any item - i work for a company and have to work with these guidline daily so i would suspect argos is no different and if you tryed to return this item contact there head office?

DSR doesn't apply - the OP picked up the goods from an Argos shop.

I would agree, though, either return it as not working, or contact Argos HQ. Or get a working card.

Although you didn't know it wouldn't work, you could have objected to it not being covered by the 30-day guarantee at the time. The cashier would have refunded you.

You could have then bought it on-line and got the statutory cooling-off period under DSR.

FWIW it seems that Clydesdale Bank issue MasterCard Debit cards too. Perhaps phone and ask if you can get your Maestro replaced for one of these?

I imagine NowTV will accept that.

    ............

Do you work for Sky or Argos as the link is from the nowtv forums as far as I can see.. which is buried in the help section..

Anyway WHY don't they display a link like (Important Information) on the main webpage... this would stop a load of people with the same problem as me...

The ISSUE here is NowTV and Argos NOT displaying which card details is needed Properly to customers, not hidden away...that is wrong to me..

it's the usual story of companies trying to get away with what they want..

Let us be strictly accurate here. It is the fact that OP concluded the order in store that DSR's don't apply. You can order by phone or any other distance means and pick up personally in store and DSR's still apply
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

You have a card, a Maestro card, which is well known not to have all the features of most other cards.

Why did you not ask whether your card would work with the product at the time of purchase?

I thought they'd already done away with Maestro cards and didn't realise any banks still issued them.

It has been well known for a long time that Maestro cards can't be used for setting up credit facilities and repeat payments with most companies. I've never even had a Maestro card and know there are restrictions to using them so the info must be readily available for anyone who has one.
  • Excuse me but.. you are very wrong as I have loads of direct debits all setup through my (Clydesdale Maestro Bank Card)... and have been using it for about 15yrs...if companies like Ebay, TalkTalk, Santander, E.On , ect. accept it, so there can't be anything wrong with Mastro.

I didn't know I had to use a credit card as again I saw no reference to them..

At Argos you have to pay first before you get your item and that's when the lady said there was no 30 day return policy on this item..

please people I'm asking where I stand getting a refund... Not about my bank card..ok
