Dog toilet problems

I have just been gifted a 14 month old staffy male as a friend to my 1 year old staffy female.
I currently live in a flat with no direct garden access. We do have a shared garden but it is through another block door.

I have always walked my female every 4 hours and she is good as gold going to the toilet and we never have any mess from her inside.

However the new boy is use to going off the lead in a garden and wasn't walked at all so he is not use to going toilet on the lead and as such had held it till we are sleeping and I wake to pee and poo.
He doesn't get told off or anything like that, I just get on and clean it up and always praise the female for peeing outside so he can hear / see that.
I am taking him out for long walks and even taking him into our garden but on a lead.

Does anyone have any advice ? I am happy to put the work in but never had a dog who wouldn't go on the lead.
There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, and roam the world at will.

You could try crating him at night - but you will need to do some work to get him used to it too. Or restricting the area that he has at night similar to a crate size. Dogs are less likely to soil their 'den'.

I had a rescue dog a few years ago who was unreliable with toileting. I set a clock and took him out every hour - luckily I am home all the time so I could do it.

Have you tried him on a flexi lead kept loose or a long line training lead?
It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

I hope both dogs are neutered?

As above, try flexi lead - it will extend to him him a bit of freedom, may be easier this way?

Turn your back on him and resist the urge to peek!
My old dog wouldn't go while he was on his lead unless he was 100% sure you weren't peeking and there was noone else around!

then surly only 1 needs to be neutered. and maybe gettingready thinks doing both will help with op's original question, per-chance.

IMHO if you have both male and female dogs then unless you are breeding from them (and the OP may be) then just doing one doesn't really work from a behavioural point of view. the male can smell in season females from miles away! and an in season female will just want to find a 'boyfriend' for a 'one night stand'!

oh! so what your saying is we need further conformation from op weather breading is on the cards. but using my powers of deduction, I say breading is not on the cards due to the amount of shovel and mop duties involved. and living in a flat, so you may be right, meritaten. 2 for the chop:eek:

can op not let dog off in the available garden till its deed is done, and it gets used to you and the other dogs habbits, thus reducing your wake up greetings.

Gettingready things that keeping male and female unneutered staffies in one flat flat WILL lead to puppies and we all know how many staffies die each and every day and that there is no need to breed any more.

So Gettingready thinks both should be neutered. To avoid indoor pregnancies and also chasing up dogs met while out.

hi gettingready, ok lets have a look,

keeping un-neutered dogs will lead to puppies. correct.

we all know how many staffies die each and every day. that's not true, but please enlighten us with the figures. ;).

no need to breed any more, (staffies I assume your referring too ;) ). untrue, some folk like the breed of dog, not me personally I wouldn't ever have one, but that just my preference. if no more where breed then some folk wouldn't like that. as far as im aware its not on the dd list.

your last bit was correct also.
