Dreading Halloween...

If you think rationally, the worst they'll do is throw an egg at your house as anything else they can be arrested for...it's more than likely going to rain anyway, so the egg will wash off really quickly. We just don't answer the door on halloween, I've never been out trick or treating and we don't put up decorations. I won't be taking our daughter out when she's old enough either as I think it's terrible to scare little old ladies, plus you spend all year telling your kids not to accept candy from strangers then tell them it's ok....mixed messages or what!
why would you be scaring little old ladies?0 -
If they throw eggs, throw stuff back at them. Like rocks or something.
Just kidding, but i'm going to be parking my car up against my gates so no one can get up my drive.0 -
Take a good book, go to a nice pub, and treat yourself to a couple of pints/glasses of wine and a pub meal. Problem solved.0

Could you meet a friend and go for a bite to eat/cinema to kill a few hours, that has to be better than stopping in and hiding from the kids.0

I love Halloween. Always loads and loads of kids dressed up well. 99% polite, most with parents.
Like most have said around here, people only tend to knock on decorated houses.
People do go to town here though, big elaborate displays in the gardens, "ghost houses" in the garages.
No old people here though0 -
I'm dreading it too. We moved into this house nearly a year ago, so missed Halloween last year. We've always lived in flats with a communal front door so avoided them in the past! Now we live in a semi detached house on a long street so there are bound to be lots of kids knocking. We have a 6 month old pup who goes mental with excitement every time the doorbell goes. The batteries will be coming out of that for a start!! But that won't stop them from knocking, and we don't have a lounge door so I can't keep the noise away from the pup. We'll have to shut the curtains and pretend we're out. I'm not picking him up and trying to control him every time the door goes and I have to open it.DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

I hate it too! I can't believe anyone lets their children go to strangers' houses and ask for sweets/money... it's just wrong!
I never open the doors and it's obvious I'm in. The worst I've had so far is banging and shouting (no egging) but it's so frightening to be sat there with horrible kids hammering on the doors. Am also worried this year that they'll frighten the cat.
Will be so glad when it's over again for another year.
I agree.
I hate Halloween too, why should I buy sweets for other peoples' children who I've never met? I never answer the door. :T0 -
Iam in the same situation. Normally me and OH buy sweets and are happy to open the door and give sweets out. This year though OH won't be home and I don't answer the door when I am in on my own unless I know who it is. I certainly don't open the door once it gets dark.
I am probably going to sit in the back bedroom and use my laptop and have all the other inside lights off. I know some years other houses have been egged and I don't want that to happen to my house. The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

Our pup is exactly the same, he goes wild each time the doorbell goes OR someone knocks OR he sees someone's shadow through the misted glass of the front door. I hadn't actually thought about that. It could end up being to our advantage though, as he sounds A LOT bigger and scarier than he actually is when he goes on a door barking spree, so will scare lots off0 -
The kids around here are pretty rude too. We have an 18 month old who has a 7pm bedtime and a very big dog that makes A LOT of noise when someone knocks on the door, so I am not looking forward to it.
We hide, well we try too. You'd have thought if you knock and nobody answers the door you'd move onto the next, ohh no! Last year they all decided to either continue banging on the door for 5 minutes, tried to look through the letterbox or shine torches through the windows and this went on until 10pm. My poor bubba had a terrible nights sleep.0
