    Or alternatively they're more expensive just because they have much higher overheads.

    Yes it is asking for trouble, these taps are garbage.
    A thankyou is payment enough .

    Avoid the mixer taps with the single flow / temp lever control. These operate by the disposition of a plastic diverter disc in the housing which in short time chews up and is not worth repairing. Get taps which have separate hot and cold control valves.
